bmw.switch.wiring.color.codes

Post by dd »

1. hi.
2. i am trying to use don eilenberger's brilliant post to wire my motolight caliper mounted lights.
3. i have obtained the parts from his post: http://www.eilenberger.net/R1200R_Roads ... switch.htm
4. i also have my motolights.
5. the fog lamp switch that don mentions (part # 61-31-7-694-815) has three wires that come out from it.
6. there is a black wire, a purple wire, and a gray wire with a white stripe.
7. i need to know the code for these wires so that i can properly attach them to my motolights.

my question is this:
1. does anyone know the wiring diagram for this switch and what the colors represent?

thanks so much.
-daniel.

My switch has a purple, a black, and a white wire. The black and white wires form a complete circuit when the switch is activated. Use a multi-meter to determine which wires to use. If you don't have a meter, try the two gray wires.

friends,
i figured this out by trial and error.
if your switch comes with a black, a purple, and a grey/white wire, then i suggest you use the black wire and the grey/white wire.
(i just cut the purple wire short and let it retract into the sleeve).
this is worth the effort, since it looks great when done.

Does the little green LED in the switch come on without using the purple wire? I have this switch and have it working but don't remember the wire colors. You should have to use all 3 wires:

1 wire to the power source
1 wire to the relay
1 wire to ground (This allows the LED in the switch to come on), this lets you know your lights are on without having to actually look at the lights.

dderig,
hi.
thanks for your post.
i gave up on the light in the switch, and let that wire die (the purple wire).
how would i connect it to ground if i wanted to salvage it?
do you know where you tapped into a ground wire?

I tapped into the headlight and got my power and ground from the parking light bulb, where did you get your power from? I am determined to help you! The switch is much better with the LED functioning.

dave,
1. i drilled through the rear of the headlight case.
2. i ran the relay/switch power lead to the positive wire of the parking bulb.
3. are you suggesting to run the third purple wire from the handlebar fog light switch to the brown ground wire of the same parking light bulb and that this will make the actual handlebar switch light up?
4. if so, did you have to use extra wire to make that distance?

again, thanks for your suggestions.

I ran all three wires from the switch into the headlight housing and ran a seperate wire from the relay coil into the same headlight housing (So 4 total wires into the headlight housing). Then conected 1 of the switch wires to the power wire on the parking light bulb, 1 switch wire to the wire from the relay coil and the 3rd switch wire to the ground from the parking light bulb. I just don't remember the colors and am too lazy to go take it apart and look but I believe the purple wire may go to ground.

By the way I am not a novice when it comes to electronics so you can have some confidence in chatting with me I won't set your bike on fire :D

Ok here it is, the black wire should go to your relay, the purple wire to ground (brown) and the white /grey wire to the power wire from the parking light bulb.
