Rear Shock Preload

Hi Folks!

Anyone happen to know how the rear shock preload adjustment works on the R1100R? That is, which way do you turn the adjustment collar to make it stiffer? Softer?

The R1100R does not have the hydraulic preload adjustment like the GS or other models. Instead you have to use this round hooked tool (should be included in your toolset under the seat) to turn the silver base of your damper. Clockwise = harder, anti-clockwise = softer.

You can also adjust the damping by turning the little screw which you can see when you look at the damper. Clockwise = stiffer, anti-clockwise = softer. Have a look at the manual which came with your oilhead by thew way.

Some interesting results...

Going into the preload adjustment, my goal was to increase the preload in order to get better response in the rear to sharp bumps (potholes, dropped manhole covers, et al). However, I understood that such an adjustment would probably decrease the ride quality.

So I adjusted the preload -- turning the collar clockwise two clicks as viewed from the bottom of the shock. That appeared to be the direction that would increase tension on the spring.

However...

The ride didn't get worse. It got better. Meanwhile, the response to sharp bumps didn't get worse. It got better.

Go figure.

I would have considered clockwise to be as viewed from the TOP of the Shock.
I.E. If your wrench protruded from the clutch lever side of the bike, Pushing it FORWARD would be 'clockwise' adjustment.

Then, I reduced the preload by accident ... But with good results :)

I am delighted with your better results. :D
I believe the least pre-load setting is targeted at a 160 pound rider, the second setting at that rider + luggage, the third at rider + pillion, the fourth at rider + pillion + luggage.

Hi all, am a newbie - and just picked up a 2001 R1100R, delighted with it.
One issue is that the previous owner had it lowered, and ride height too low for me, Am 6ft 2".
Works performance shocks on front and back.
kind of related to this post, I've found the preload nut on rear shock, am assuming i tighten this i.e move up towards the spring to raise the ride height ?

need to rebuilt centre stand (waiting parts) so when i get them in a day or two. Am going to adjust ride height.
Appreciate any thoughts/advice...
