R1300R ??

Post by redwing »

Any news about a R1300R. Seems like I saw something about an R1300R in Germany or someplace. I know this is vague but BMW used to have a R1150R before there was a R1200R. The 1300 motor seems to be a logical progression to the R line as with all there models. However why would one need 170 hp???

I can't imagine a BMW R series engine with 170hp but I can't contemplate why you wouldn't want it!

Bring it on.

It's just good to know you can be competitive, if you choose.

When you can, you can choose.

For last couple of years, I've read there will be heads derived from the HP spec motor on next gen rr bikes, but nothing along the lines of a 13XX. The piston mass would create some major challenges in maintaining rpm range/balance/emissions, etc., as they get larger bores. JMO, but spending $ on light weight rotating mass bits and better flow heads, etc., will gain more of what I would want VS Horse Power by the bigger c.c. route.

Lets work on wanting but not needing 120HP first.

I was just about to chastise those of you that were lusting after the extra hp (I must be getting old) but I was sitting at a light Friday night and a V Max pulled up beside me. The 'little head' wanted to smoke him SO BAD!!!

Probably would have surprised him, though...

I guess the next one will be R1250R...

See this article (in German) of the next R1250GS.

I saw that article and as one might expect ... I can't read German. A R1250GS ... interesting but why not use the 1300 motor? What are the spec's for the R1250GS? I saw an article from totalmotorcycle forum about a diesel bike that got 150 claimed mpg. with a bunch of horses. Any manufacture (BMW) must be thinking bigger and better ... so the R1250GS it. When might it be in the States?

Amazingly low weight on the diesel. I would love to see "whatever it takes" for motorcycling to stay a healthy motorsport, be it 4 stroke, 2 stroke, electric, gas, diesel, forced induction, etc. New technology and light weight materials will make so much possible. I just hope it is reliable and affordable. We need "traction control" to keep some bikes rolling now, so bigger engines/power alone is not where I want to see progress in my next dream bike(s). The same money spent on the R+D and Certification of a "new" engine, just to have one, is a negative to me if those same hours and dollars could/would be used on lighter rims, top shelf shocks, FD's that aren't constantly a failure concern, etc. Of course "Need VS Want" is very subjective and the market rules in the end.

@ jha & redwing : in the article in Motorrad, they are speculating about the next evolution of the boxer motor. They think that bmw will not use the HP2 engine (133hp) as it is now because the cilinderheads are not cast, but machined. (extremely expensive to produce but a must when you go for top HP) Speculation : a 1250 based on the HP2 engine, but with cast cilinder heads. And an emphasis towards torque rather then top HP. I have the printed version of the article, they also speculate that bmw will most likely have a wish to produce a cheaper bike, the actual frame demands much welding, which costs mucho mucho money, so the next one will be more like the japanese aluminium frames. Ouch...
Motorrad is -very- well informed when it comes to bmw.

GS with a double cam

The BMW HP2 Sport is not only a sporty, stylish motorcycle. Like a window, it look to the future of the Boxer engine. For their performance of 133 hp and above all the speed necessary to create, she got cylinder heads, each with two upper camshafts are the four radial valves via cam followers actuate. A lighter, stronger and speed because of the possible efficient cam profiles leistungsträchtigere design than the current solution with a high-lying camshaft, short bumpers and Kipphebeln. The BMW engineers had never had a doubt that these mechanics are not an exclusive Precious model would remain reserved. Your expensive CNC machined inlet lot is for the production of larger quantities, however, too expensive, it was to hear. But even with raw channels and smaller sections for more torque in the lower and medium speed range could DOHC head of the boxer a strong performance to pay. Over 120 hp with good quality and homogeneous gas power development - so estimates MOTORCYCLE.

Thanks for the info... I don't think I'll be getting rid of my R; however it's nice to look foward. And you know that when you buy a new motorcycle, car, truck, ... there is an optimum time to trade it in......
