orange R1150R
Hi R1150R... Did the R1150R or the R1150R Boxster come in orange? I want to change the color on my R1200R to perhaps black and orange. I found several pictures of R1150Rs in orange on a google search. Everything is at the planning stage. Colors, patterens, parts, everything is up to change or same. I'm thinking orange and BMW might have a history together and that would have value for me. So, what about the orange R1150R?

I have seen the orange too and it really does look good. It is not a stock color though.

Were you looking at Bronze Rocksters?
Re: orange R1150R
The new K-bikes are available in 'lava orange', if that helps. The only orange R1150 I can think of is the Rockster.redwing wrote:Hi R1150R... Did the R1150R or the R1150R Boxster come in orange? The orange color will provide greater visibility in traffic, besides looking classy.

Thanks for everyones response...I agree Buckster - orange is not a stock color. But ricebuner mentions that the Rocksters are in a bronze and I think I found a few on a google/picture search. MattPie points to the lava orange on the K1300gt. I think that is a candy orange and that might work. I think like cyclerob... the orange will look sharp and perhaps a black/orange combination or maybe just all orange. Strangelove shows a topic where a rider has a hemi-orange R1150R and it looks good. Also the wheels are black and pin striped in orange.
Check this one out courtsey of mickeyt http://www.thecoolhunter.co.uk/article/ ... 34-bmw-r7/
So a regular orange is not a stock color but the bronze and lava orange is a BMW color. I'm thinking, pickin', and grinning.

They ought to call it the 'Cal Trans' color.

Re: orange R1150R
The Flying Pumpkin from the thread quoted above is mine. It was painted this brave colour by a previous owner. I repainted it this winter because of a few dings and nicks that I wanted to freshen up. Well, in real fact, I was only going to paint one or two pieces, but by the time I started taking it apart, everything but the headlight cheeks were redone. If you look carefully you can see that they are a very slightly different orange. I like the idea of painting the sport screen to integrate it into the bike's colour, I found it looked too much like an "add on" before that.
My bike started life in that bumble bee special edition paint.
I'll tell you what, when you drive a bike as big and sort of individual looking as an 1150R, then you paint it REEEALLLY orange everywhere you go people want to chat with you.
Edit: Here's what It looked like a year ago.

I tried to recreate the number rondel with a vinyl sticker, but the compound curves of the tank made it very difficult. IN the end I decided to forego the number in favour of getting the thing done, and going riding.

I like your bike's look Ritchard. The Flying Pumpkin eh.... well named. How does a repaint wear? How long was the bike orange before you repainted it orange again? Did the paint wear well? Is redundancy a good quality? Did the wheels come in black and might they fit an 2008 R1200R?
I'm almost sure to have the bike painted at a shop somewhere. However taking the tank, two side pieces, and the front fender off seems do-able. Mostly nuts, bolts, and screws, and I can probably do that. But then I'ld have to put them back on... I'll think on that.
Thanks for the interest. I like that orange. Now I got 4 pix of that bike. You should take a trip to Florida.

Hi Kristi... I did consider yellow but the wheels would almost have to be black. And then all the silver; the forks, wishbone, foot pegs, motor, and on and on. So the silver knocked out the choice yellow. Did I see your location is Texas? I'm from Houston. Out north.. Aldine..Humble. Imagine... humble Texas. Are you from Texas?GypsyRR wrote:Consider yellow.

Consider purple/blue

Just kidding. Orange will be very nice.

But if that doesn't work out........... yellow is still nice.

(yes, I'm from Texas)

First off, Kristi's photoshop'd 1200Rs above look wicked. That metallic greeny yellow is fantastic.redwing wrote:I like your bike's look Ritchard. The Flying Pumpkin eh.... well named. So far the repaint has help up well. It's traveled about 15,000 kms this year so far, with only one ding in the orange on the windscreen from a stone presumably. The materials used to paint now are pretty fantastic, the basecoat/clearcoat system making for a wonderful finish that is very durable, especially when applied by an individual with a bit of skill. In the end though, it's all in the handwork, the prep, the sanding between coats, the final wetsand and polish. I learned an awful lot by hanging out with my autobody guy as he did me a favour and painted the bike parts.
I think the bike was only its original colour for a year or maybe two. that means that it has been orange for 6 or 7 years, now for the second time. The first repaint lasted very well, but had got a little nicked up, one spot that really bugged me was my own fault where I had let the tank slip onto the side piece while reinstalling the tank. that left a gouge too big to ignore, and that's where the full repaint got started.
The wheels...as far as I can tell, they were painted black. Whoever did it did such a nice job that you cannot tell at all. It's only when I see a picture like this:

That I realize that the wheels were done. They look right to me in black, and the pinstripe really sets them off. If you're considering a repaint, take 'em off, prep 'em, and get them painted. Your painter will know how to apply the finish so that it lasts.
You will of course save money by taking the painted bits off by yourself and bringing them to your painter. You can also save money if you do some of the prep work yourself. That might include a very thorough degreasing and then a light sanding all over. It's nothing to take the shiny bits off the bike.
Funny you should mention Florida, a season-ending trip to Key West is in the works for November, if I can arrange the time off.
Here's one more pic from my pro photog buddy Art Turner. He says I look like Boba Fett.

Re: orange R1150R
Yes Kristi ... you're right. The purple/blue, yellow, and orange all work well. Looking at the 3 pictures probably several colors would work. How much detail can one apply with Photo-Shop?
And Ritchard has a picture of a yellow R1150R with silver and black that works well. I think the R1150R Roadster came in a color called bronze but looks very close to orange.
So what to do now? I'm likin' orange and black. The 2008 R1200R has contours around the BMW logo on the tank. That's the orange on the tank. My thinking is a black bike with orange flowing from the tank to the side pieces. I think with the parts all tied together...a contrasting color(orange) would work.
And orange yes but the shade is the question. My next step is to see what shades of orange BMW offers and get some samples. The K1300 comes in an orange but looks like a candy orange and the R1150R Boxster's bronze.
I have some time before I can get the bike painted. Money is the problem. Any idea what it might cost?
So ... you must be from around Houston ... and you ride/have a motorcycle... 05 Granite Grey. Nice.
Do you still live in Houston? I'm planning to make a trip this fall to the Edwards Plateau due west of Austin. I have an arrow head (actually 'point') from my dad. An archaeologist said the point was 6000 years old or older.??? And from the Edwards Plateau.
So... you must be from around Houston.??

Hi Ritchard ... Boba Fett??? Are you gonna let this guy get away with that??? Gimme his adress and my buddies will go explain the situation.
Ok ...enough. My main concern about a repaint is the durabality of the new color. The durabality problem is solved. I know you live up north with a somewhat different economy... but what might it cost to have the bike painted if I brought them the parts?... as you suggested.
The yellow R1150R looks good but I still think the orange is going to work. Black over orange. The 2008 R1200R has some contouring around the BMW logo on the tank that would be orange. And a little more orange on the side pieces.
My idea is a black bike with orange flowing over the contours.
Kristi was right. Several colors would look good.
Enjoy your trip to Florida looks good. You'll probably get free room and free food and free gas. What a deal.

The cost I can't really comment upon. My guy did me a favour and did the paint for a few hundred bucks. I am pretty sure you'd not normally pay that little.
