What would you look for and check.........?
Hello,
Thanks for the kind welcome I got the last time I posted. I talked with the shipper today and my bike ought to be here in a couple of weeks. It is coming from BMW of Western Oregon all the way out to here to Topeka, Kansas. I know the basics, but I am a first time beemer owner. What would you look for and check, if you were receiving a new-to-you 2002 R1150R? The bike looked almost like new from the pictures, but I will see it for real for the first time when it gets here. Any BMW idiosyncrasies I should be aware of the first time I start and ride it? That first time might be a little while as we are having single digit temps right now. Just wondering what to expect. Many thanks in advance.

Mate - Check the obvious things that people fiddle with.
Tyres and tyre pressures - Are there any repairs in the tyres?
Wheel security - Are the front and rear brake caliper bolts, front axle bolt and pinch bolts, and rear wheel bolts tight?
Has the handle bar been played with? - Check the clamp bolts.
All you are looking for is any loose stuff that can kill you.
As far as the bike goes, there should be very little that isn't really obvious on the R. If the bike has been washed to death at the dealer, and then left to sit around, they suffer badly from corrosion in the electrical connectors. You will soon know when you test all the systems. Spin the back wheel and check for 'abnormal' noises. These things make a lot of strange noises at the best of times, but take it easy until you learn what is 'normal'. Ditto the front.
Ride it gently for a few miles until you are sure everything works ok and it seems good. Then park it and have another good visual look over the engine and drive line for any obvious leaks. Ride it again, a bit harder, further, faster, and check again. If all is good, do a good run and enjoy a fantastic machine.
Cheers.

The most commonly reported problem with that model year has been over-tighthened cable ties under the steering head.
Here's a good reference for you to find them that was posted by Cyclerob in this thread:

Re: What would you look for and check.........?
Thanks for the input. I found the wiring issue in a search of the forum. That is a great diagram, showing which ones to take care of. I also found the fuel line connector issues. I've found various fuel connectors suggestions from this forum. Anyone have a recommendation on which ones or which kind, or brand is best and reasonably priced. I want the best, but I don't want to spend more than I have to.
The shop that I am buying the bike from said they replaced the clutch slave cylinder because it was weeping. Comments? Thanks very much.

ksbeemer,
I'm got an '04 r1150r down in Florida that I need to get up to Iowa. What was the cost to ship the moto for you? You can reply offline if you'd like [email protected]
Does anyone know a good company that will do this down the Florida area?
Of course my preferred idea is to fly down and ride the bike back up...
