Memory Saver

I've seen what seems to me to be a cool little device. You can buy them already made but one could be made at home quite easily. It is a memory saver. For when you have to disconnect your car or motorcycle battery and you don't want to have to reset all of your radio stations and clocks and what not.
You just find a 9 volt battery connector ( like what is in many smoke alarms ) and wire it to a male cigarette lighter power take off. You just leave this plugged in to your cigarette lighter or motorcycle power plug while you disconnect your motorcycle's battery and your memories should be maintained. Apparently 9 volts are enough. I guess the same could work if you hooked up a 12 volt battery somehow using the same sort of device.

I believe that you can achieve the same result by leaving the battery tender/charger connected to the accessory socket and turned on when you remove the battery.
I certainly recall information to this effect when using a CTEK unit on non canbus bikes and on cars - sorry I'm not certain whether the canbus would prevent this on the R1200R.

I would be extremely hesitant to connect a battery tender (or any battery charger) to the bike without the battery installed. A battery charger changes AC type electric to DC type, to do this it has to rectify the voltage (smooth it out) and usually a charger will let a bit of ripple through. The battery tends to help smooth it (voltage) out , without the battery that ripple will be getting into your electronic 'stuff' even with the key off. I wouldn't risk it on my bike.
Stick with the 9V battery, mechanics have been using that trick for years. Just make sure the polarity is correct.

Hm, might be handy at times. The alternative is not that terrible but sometimes it annoys me to lose the trip counter and averages on the 'computer'. So, would this work on the aux jack or is there a problem with the Canbus acting as a blocker?

I've been using these little memory saver's for years working on automotive and diesel engine's,it just fools the vehicle into thinking voltage is present so it doesn't forget it memory.I am interested if anybody has tried this, if not I might have to go to the garage,but wait it's 12 degree's out there.I'll wait a day or so maybe the answer will appear.

CTEK XS7000 General Information
The Multi XS7000 charger is designed for year round use, with the added benefit of supply mode, which provides a power supply should the battery need removing. It will also act as a memory saver, preventing the loss of radio presets, alarm settings, etc.

I don't think the memory saver facility applies to all models though!

I bought a package of 5 "heavy duty" 9 volt battery connectors yesterday at Radio Shack. I will put a male cig lighter (12volt car male ) on the other end this weekend. I have an adaptor female cig lighter to male BMW power outlet at hand. This way I can use it on my cars also.
