NEP / Vista Cruise Throttle Lock

I don't about you guys, but I have gotten somewhat tired of buying Throttlemiesters or Kaoke throttle control devices. They work ok, but cost an arm and a leg for what you get. And I have a set coming to me as I write this, dah ! I spend most of my time over on Adventure Rider since I own and have owned GS's for quite a while now. Anyhow, I bought a Vista Cruise earlier this year to see if I could get it to work on the RR but no luck. So while browsing ADVRider today I ran across this posting of a guy who figured out how to mount the $ 17.95 generic NEP Cruise throttle lock to his 06 GS. The steps he took are applicable to our bikes since it is the same switchgear. A Dremel tool, and about an hour of your time tops and you have a very nice, factory looking throttle lock on your bike. The modifications to your bike are negliable. Search for NEP Throttle on Google netted multiple sources, so for a mere $ 17.95, I'll be ordering mine tonight. Thought you all might be interested.

I had one of those that came on a used K1200RS I bought. It was great. I wondered why more BMW riders didn't mount them.

Interesting idea since the device shouldn't change setting when the grips heat up.. please take detailed photos as you prep your new one.

Thought it woiuld be good to contact NEP to see if they had a model that would work on the BMW without Dremeling. Found their name, NEP Sales Inc. Glendale CA, in the March 1984 American Motorcyclist. The phone number listed was no longer in service. Anyone out there know the new corporate identity for NEP?

I like the looks of this device and am not opposed to modifying it. But, maybe they have already designed one that fits.

Been lurking on this forum for a long time, gleaning useful information and quality(?) entertainment from the group for many months. Now I have some information I can contribute, just in case some of you folks don't know where to find the NEP Throttle Lock. I saw that info on the NEP Cruise Control at advrider.com. Look under bikes/gspot/NEP Throttle Lock. After a long search, I found a source for the piece. It can be found at californiasportstouring.com.
I ordered one piece, but rats! I had to order another because oops, I messed up the first one. I didn't follow the directions exactly. (It's best to see how it fits on the bike before you get out your Dremel tool!)

I've followed the directions from the ADV posting and my NEP Cruise Control is all modified, (cut, drilled, Dremeled) installed and functional. As a throttle lock it is perfect. However, as a throttle lock release, it still needs some work. Slowing down could be a problem.

Apparently there is not quite enough space between the grip and the throttle cable housing for the NEP to fit without binding. I need to figure out how to gain about a 2 mm gap.

There must be something I can move slightly, I just don't yet know what. Any suggestions wuld be greatfully received.

I've got no answer to your problem Ancient mariner, just company for your misery :>(. (How do you work those emoticoms?) I too have the same problem. I got as far as separating the pieces of the MEP, test fitting, cutting, test fitting. But like you, there is not enouigh clearance between the twist grip and the MEP. Throttle stays where ever you put it. I also have the heated grips. Sure hope someone can help us with this, as I plan some long trips this summer, and I was hoping not to have a cramped wrist!
By the way, I just installed my new Reynolds Seat. Haven't had the bike out yet to test it, but it looks cool! Black with white piping.

I've got it. My throttle lock only locks when it is engaged.

I did several things, all of which helped. I re-Dremeled the lever more like the one in the instructions. It really looks butchered now, but it works. It had been pushing the plates towards the grip. I also noticed that the thickened ends of the plates were resting on the throttle cable housing. I relieved the parts that were making contact. I sanded the plates thinner, enough to remove all mold marks and lettering. I also champhered the screw holes slightly more, to make up for the thinning of the plates due to the sanding. I took pictures and will try to learn how to post them. Finally, I rubbed the plates with wax paper (an old trick of my late mother's, used to free up sticky zippers). The whole assembly now works much more smoothly, although it is a little loosey goosey. But it works quite well.

Thanks for the tip. My NEP is tight even without the lever mounted. I will try the sanding trick, and maybe your mother's waxed paper trick too. Glad you had success with yours. I think we are at about the same speed on our RR projects. I was thinking about the handguards too. Seems you gotta get the GS model. Checking prices, I found that BMW of Lynchburg had the best deal. Still not cheap though. By the way, do you know how to use the emoticons to the left <?

Oh yeah, one more thing Bruce-
What size flat head screws do you use. The smallest I could find at Lowes was #6. I would like to try something smaller if I could find it.

I used #6 stainless screws. I had been looking for something smaller, but in retrospect, I think you need the diameter since you end up grinding away so much of them.

My plates locked the throttle even without the thumb piece until I relieved the pressure caused by the thickened ends i.e shoulders. I think that was more important than carving away more of the thumb piece.

When you write a message, simply click on one of the emoticons and it will appear where your cursor was setting... You will see some symbles. In this case it is colon capital D. But once you submit you get the emoticon.

This afternoon I installed my GS style hand guards. It took a while but they look great. Tuesday my Windshield is due from Cee Bailey's. I built up a bracket to lift the bottom of my windshild bracket, ( a bracket bracket?) and I can't wait to see how it works.

Glad you got your GS handguards on . I'd seen a couple notes on how to install them. Seems a bit of a challenge. Did you have to design another bracket for the right side handguard? Another question, where did you buy the handguards, and did you get a good buy? I'm learning that this RR bike is like a boat- where you keep throwing your coin into a hole. But it's worth it! OK, I tried the emoticons. I don't see them as I write, but I see the symbols. I guess that's what you were referring to.

I have to ask.
What's the deal with throttle locks? Maybe it's because I'm coming off Moto Guzzis and I'm used to holding back the springs in those Dell'Orto carbs, but the R1200R has the lightest throttle I've ever felt. Simply laying a finger or two on the throttle seems to keep it in place and if you have to adjust the mirror or scratch your right knee you can take your hand off for a few seconds without any major drama. So what are you guys useing them for.

I don't know Harry, you must have a kung-fu grip. Around town for me is OK, but after 3 or 4 hours on the highway I get a little crampy (no, Midol doesn't help - before you ask).

Having said that, I still don't have a throttle lock. Those things scare me. I can see myself using one after a long day, droning down the highway, and nodding off while maintaining 70mph, without so much as sudden engine braking to wake me up. ...shudder...

Well I'm coming off a R1200RT, so I guess I'm spoiled by the luxury of a real cruise control I'm thinking (dreaming) of a coast to coast trip this summer, so I'm trying to gear it up for a comfortable ride. Maybe your bike is different than mine Harry, but my throttle snaps back when I release wrist pressure.

I have the BMW "Authority" throttle lock on my K 75. It's nothing more than a thumb screw with a tensioning spring that screws into pre-drilled hole in the the throttle cable housing. I keep just enough tension on it so that I have to close the throttle myself without any assistance from the return spring. Since it is always there (except right after a trip to the dealer's shop), it's not an issue in an emergency.

On long trips my right arm appreciates being able to stretch, scratch, etc.

The NEP may turn out to be just as good, but no where near as elegant and inexpensive.

It seems like a Universal Vista Cruise would mount with less modification than the NEP. Has anyone tried one?
