Aftermarket can's effect on fuel economy?

A friend is selling his Rockster, and is selling his Remus and Y-pipe separately. I searched here and read about the effects on weight and sound, but no one's mentioned fuel economy. Better? Worse? Or is the difference insignificant?

I'd say it depends more on how you ride. but with the Remus you tend to ride harder cos it sounds nicer...

I have a full remus (y-pipe and can) and as a benchmark, at 80mph, in 6th gear, at 4000 RPM, I went 227 miles on 4.1 gallons of gas. MPG comes out to approx. 55.


if anyone has a similar cruising fuel economy, now you have something for comparison.

In the city, I get crappy, crappy gas mileage (just how I ride); something like 35-40 mpg.

I've got a Remus 'Y' and can on my 1150 with a Power Commander 3. On trips 50+mpg is not uncommon, even with a passenger. Not to mention that includes occasional jaunts up into the triple digits listening to the beautiful sounds!

Generally speaking, with the Y pipe and the aftermarket can (very little difference between the various vendors) you'll realize ~ 3 to 4 hp gain and 18 to 20 pounds weight savings. Everything being equal, the mileage should improve 1 to 2 mpg as the engine has less exhaust restriction. The truth being said, as mentioned in the posts above, the new sound and the crisper engine response usually offset the mileage gains as the rider tends to exercise a bit more right hand twist.
