Rev Limiter

I've hit the limiter a couple of times. Never on a near-empty tank. Both times in third. Both times traffic demanded too much attention for shifting to cross my mind. It just felt like the engine power dropped. No lurch, just no acceleration.

Maybe the lurching could be caused by a bubble hitting the fuel pump when the bike is under hard acceleration and the tank is near empty? Just speculating here.

Just a thought: were you almost out of gas? That's how mine behaves when I downshift twice and nail it, if the tank is almost empty. The first time it happened I did think it was the rev limiter, but it happened again and again with an empty tank, and now it's my signal to hit the very first gas station. Today, for instance, as the tripmeter went past 250 miles I did a full-throttle test just before each off-ramp with a station. When I got the violent "cut out, cut in, cut out again" action I pulled off and it took 6.09 gallons. She was running on fumes!

I have exactly the same experience.
When the tank is almost empty (after 200 miles); and when i nail it (in 2nd or 3th) the rev limiter (what i think it is) is active at 5500 RPM! normaly the Rev limiter is active at 8000 RPM.
This is anoying! Could someone please tell me why the bike react like this because there should be enough gas in the tank for at least 30 miles.

it always happend;
-when there is less fuel in the tank (about 20-30 miles to go)
- with full throttle
- in 2nd or 3th

is it normal?

maybe, but its weird that only a few of the R1200R riders experience this problem.
I will open a new topic because it seems to be another problem than TS has experienced.

I'll answer again since you got one answer already.

Think what happens when you "nail it" - what does the small amount of fuel in the tank do? It resists moving (laws of inertia) - so it moves toward the very back of the tank. The fuel pickup is toward the front of the tank.

No gas = sudden descrease in engine power. When the engine power decreases the remaining fuel sloshes forward to where the fuel pump pickup is. Engine has gas again - it goes - and the cycle repeats.

Don't do that when you're that low on gas.

I am glad someone wrote about this, I didn't know there was a rev limiter, I think I had about 800 miles when I must have hit mine, thought I broke something . I have been babying her ever since.

Dons explanation makes total sense, when the gas is almost empty you can have that same abrupt reaction when the front wheel is off the ground either very high or for extended periods.... scary and can't be good for the suspension when the front wheel SLAMS down. I hate when that happens.
