It was bound to happen. BMW in its infinite wisdom regarding model naming conventions has not only confused the entire BMW community but now leaves the insurance industry dumbfounded.
I received my motorcycle insurance policy "declarations page" in the mail yesterday and immediately noticed they had me insured for a F800GS. I telephoned my agent and he said to check the VIN number and if the VIM number is correct then its okay. I told him my bike is an F650GS, NOT an F800GS which is different. Then I explained how its really a 800cc engine that has been detuned to lower horsepower. He said the insurance rates are based on engine CC size, and thats likely why they show it as an F800GS.
Now I have to ask, will they pay me for an F800 GS if my bike gets totalled?

Keep a BMW picture and the 800GS pricing docs handy.
You could make some money on this deal...
the price is what, a 3k difference?
Claims people do not know the difference.
hoofah! now that is insurance...

Freedom is dangerous. Those in power that steal freedom are more dangerous.

They finally got it right. My policy went from $357 to $206. Admittedly I did have them take one driver off. They had me and my wife on the policy as drivers of the bike. That change, and the move to F650GS instead of the F800GS reduced it that much.
Re: Insurance Companies Confused by BMW
Okay, I have had another confused "entity" experience this past week. What has BMW unleashed on us?
I received my new tag registration papers and bill in the mail. They list the tag cost and the ad-valorem tax due on each vehicle. There was a little note on the F650GS bill. it said "could not calculate ad-valorem tax, please contact your tax commissioner."
What the hell?!? I called them and they said I would have to send them a copy of my Bill of Sale so they could establish a value. They were confused by the tables they had on file for some reason.
I just ordered a black "BEAK" extension and I had to get it off the F800GS parts fiche. I think this little naming convention "snafu" by BMW is going to go down as one of their silliest blunders in history.

But,I didn't get yet why they all are doing this!If they have confusion about BMW then they must have to take steps for it that these mistakes will not happen in future otherwise in future we have to face many difficulties.
