Fuel Spraying when Braking?

Hello all,

I purchased a 2003 R 1150 R last week and am experiencing an odd situation.

When braking hard during then entry to a turn, or stop, I feel a slight spray of fluid on the underside right arm. Along with the smell, it appears to be gasoline. It happens consistently, and also doesn't seem to be due to the amount of fuel in the tank.

I only feel it when braking hard, normal braking doesn't cause the issue (or at least make it noticable), and the RPM's of the engine don't seem to have an impact. Visual inspection doesn't show anything, but I may not be looking in the right place.

As I am new to the newer BMW setup (also own an airhead), any advice on where to start checking would be appreciated before I take off the tank and start following the fuel lines.

The right side fuel injector line and connection.
The quick disconnect fuel fittings above the right throttle body ( behind the black plastic cover on the frame)

You do not see fuel stains or fuel after stopping and inspecting the bike???

If either of the two items I mentioned above are the cause, you must be covered in fuel on your right side pants and jacket, not to mention down the right side of the bike. If you can feel the spray, its a major leak.

Don't really understand why hard G would affect fuel leaking under pressure, unless its just a slight increase in fuel pressure if you slam the throttle closed at higher speeds.

It's probably spraying fuel constantly, but under hard braking, the spray hits your arm.

Unfortunately, I caught sight of the spray but still can't find the source. It is coming out from near the front forks. Does brake fluid smell like gasoline? Where do I check the brake fluid levels? Non-ABS bike.

As I'm in Italy and my owners manual is in Italian. Is there a good source to find a US (English) version of the owners manual online? Also any source for a Clymer's or Haye's download (free or pay)?

I would suggest not riding the bike until you find a bike repair shop or dealer and having them look it over.

I had an identical problem couple of weeks ago. It was the quick connect that caused it. The spray was so fine that I never actually saw it, only smelled the gasoline when the bike was still but engine running. A scary feeling actually.

Suggest you search this board for info concerning:

quick-connects (QC)
fuel clamps
fuel line/hose

Lots of info here, and many (most?) of us have encountered gas leak problems with the lines/clamps/connects on R1150** bikes.

I suspect it's a loosened fuel line clamp where they attach to the fuel tank. It only leaks under hard braking because that's when the heavy fuel tank moves just enough cause a leak at the hose connection. With the bike idling, grab the fuel tank and force it in all directions while watching the right front inside portion of the tank area.

FYI, the clamps don't actually loosen, the hoses age shrink and the once tight (?) clamp becomes looser. Then fuel leaks, especially in cold weather.

SOLUTION: QUICK CONNECT not fully secured. I took my tank off to figure that out where I could have just removed the side plastic cover. Oh well.
