Bike laptop ?

Post by thepeacebullgrunt »

Anyone know where I could buy a used GETAC B300 rugged laptop http://us.getac.com/products/B300/B300_overview.html

I am planning to dedicate a laptop on my bike at all time...if I cannot find a Getac or similar I'll go for a 3G Ipad in my RKA tank bag but its more restrictive than a GETAC....

Any Help ?

PS: And no ! I didn't smoke that :smt033 nice Californian one
even if it is Saturday in my Californian garden ! But I was thinking
why not a mounting on the gas tank for a Getac laptop...
could be nice and useful for long interstate trip.

Frede - be hard to trigger the fingerprint scanner if you're wearing riding gloves..

Are you actually planning on using the computer whilst riding? Visiting the forums? Do you have any dependents?

BTW - I'll be in LaLaLand Thanksgiving week visiting my son.. might be fun to get together in person.

I just bought a Toshiba netbook with built-in WiFi - it's an awesome little machine with 8hour+ battery life

Lots of netbook deals on the web - back it up and replace it when need be

Hopefully you weren't out riding today, it was a scorcher - at least here in the valley. I thought about taking the bike out then decided to lay low until tomorrow when the temp is supposed to drop a little.

Hey Don, have you rented an R12R out here? I've rented from Long Beach BMW before and they were pretty decent.

Hey Fred... I like the idea of a computer on a bike. At the web sight where the B300 is, also is a V100. The V100 is about the size of a sheet of paper (11 by 9) and if I read the "features" page right... the screen can be rotated and then laid back over the key board. For me this farkle will have to wait ... go for it Fred. Maybe you could get a tank bag with a clear top.???

I haven't (haven't been there in about 3-4 years) mostly 'cause getting "all the gear" out there gets expensive. A 'stich, helmet and boots is a sizeable suitcase.. and if it goes missing as airlines are prone to doing pricey to replace. I should have kept the old leather Heine-Gerike jacket I had... Hmmm... I have old boots, an old Nolan helmet, both useable and no loss if they go missing.

It's a thought, I might start looking for a throwaway jacket and just ship all the stuff out to my son.

I've been thinking about a netbook too, but it appears that a whole bunch of Ipad competitors are in the pipeline. I'd like to see a reasonably rugged Android device w/ wifi, 3g and a manageable keyboard/pad, and under $300. I wouldn't be surprised to see something like that before long.

FOR DON: What sizes? I've got about three of everything.

Don,
Wear your boots. The helmet & gloves, in a bag are carry-on. And the Stitch will fit in a garment bag as your second carry-on.
I have flown to europe wearing FULL riding gear ,with my helmet and gloves as carry-on. I never trust "checking" my riding gear, they loose too much luggage.
Brad

Sorry for the thread highjack...
Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Hi Frederic...

The Asus EEE laptops are very popular with a lot of adventure m/c traveler types, partly because of the low cost ($300 or so) but additionally because the have solid state hard drives - no moving parts.

May be worth a look for you?

That's pretty amazing , getting a solid state hard drive in such an inexpensive lap top.

Thanks for the advices guys but I already own a Samsung NC10 that I use on my gas tank with a compushade.com screen hood.... I like it a lot and yet never failed.

Its just that the Getac really turn me on... large screen, antiglare and very bright under the sun....hot swappable battery's etc etc.... Price is insane but If I could find one used I'll probably buy it.

The Ipad 3G with a mat screen film on it is not bad to use on a bike parked under a tree.... and way cheaper than a Getac.

Anyone know some kind of industrial or military electronic equipments salvage or retailer ?
