Touring Luggage
I have a 2004 R1150R Rockster, fitted with BMW rack & luggage rails. Hard luggage is to expensive even on ebay, and does not merit the cost for the amount of time touring I do. Any advice an soft luggage, or throw over panniers. Thanks!

Re: Touring Luggage
I hate o say it, but the hard luggage is worth the money. It looks right on the bike, is waterproof, and secure. A friend of mine who has some soft bags also had one get slightly burned by the exhaust pipe.

Re: Touring Luggage
I use my topcase and my system cases, but on the pillion seat for my past three trips I have used a regular samsonite carry-on bag with a retractable handle and wheels. I just strap it down.
It has worked GREAT. It is easy to handle and rolling is a nice feature after a long day. It is water repellent and holds a lot. PLus I don't have to buy anything special. I will use it on my next trip to Torrey, camping and motelling, in Sept. Because it is mostly flat on top it lends itself to stacking other stuff. This time it will be a duffel with camping gear.

You've got to put up a picture of this Samsonite conversion. I have this vision of a suitcase strapped to the rear seat.Dr. Strangelove wrote:I use my topcase and my system cases, but on the pillion seat for my past three trips I have used a regular samsonite carry-on bag with a retractable handle and wheels. I don't get caught in the rain, I ride in it on purpose.
Re: Touring Luggage
Depends on your touring habits and if you tour alone or if somebody occupies the rear seat. I would agree that the original hard cases are worth the money. The kind of saddle bags ar not good. A friend of mine has used them and the scratched the paint on the rear apart of the fact that they were always a bit wobbly. If I tour alone a use a waterproof bag from Ortlieb which I strap on the rear seat. That works quite well for me.
