MOTOR OIL COMPATABILITY

Post by Malibu »

I ride an R1150R
What motor oil is compatible with BMW brand.
I use BMW brand motor oil. I'm on a road trip and need to add oil and there is no dealer around to buy the brand.
I don't like to mix brands. Rumor has it that Spectro makes BMW oil.
Is Spectro really compatible or completely different formulation?
I know you can't use any oil that is SJ rated, per owners manual.
Dealers are very vague on the subject.
Thanks,
Malibu

Mobil1 synthetic is available anywhere, that's what my R gets. 'Course, it was raised on it.

Oil is oil, synthetic and dino can be mixed in a pinch as can different weights. Yes, Spectro makes BMW oil...at least the last time I checked the label on the BMW container.

Ride it ...have fun, and don't worry about the brand of oil.

LOts of rumors about this or that oil, mine uses Mobil 1 15W50 or 20W50 available virtually everywhere, but especially WallyWorld, and if you worry 8-[ about these things just change it more often.

Thanks for the comments.
This oil doesn't have that many miles on it and hate to throw out $60.00 worth of product. So I wanted to add something that was compatible to run out some more miles.
I'm enough of an engineer to know mixing unlike chemicals, i.e. oils, especially synthetics can be a problem on gaskets etc.
Was on a trip and needed to add some, and of course - no Beemer shop.
Next time I will probably go to Mobil 1 so I can find it on the road. I refuse to carry extra oil with me. Just goes against the grain.
