yellow or red for rear indicators

Post by zeke »

So I just had the turn signals hooked into the brakes via a Kisan Signal Minder. Beemers Uber Alles did a great job for any of you folks in the DC area. They also installed my Stebel: outstanding, very clean install but a separate story.
My question is should I switch out the yellow rear lights for red? I have the clear covers so I would need to swap the bulbs. Anyone know of any legal requirements? Personally I don't think the color matters much, but I suppose red would look more uniform.
Suggestions? Thoughts?
Thanks, Zeke

i have been told that if you run the turn signals full time they must be red. Yellow is only for flashers. I'm in Maryland and was told that from a dealer.

Yeah, it's the same here in NY. If you have the turnsignal lamps on, during normal operation they will have to be red.

The amber color lens is more visable from a distance then red, so we use the factory amber and haven't had a problem with inspections or LEO so far ( 4 years).

Same here, But in Va they are more likely to follow the letter of the law.

I never thought about this, but I guess I have the same issue (brake light modulator that flashes turn signals. I have amber lenses and white bulbs, do they even make red lenses? Otherwise white lenses and red bulbs?

Seems like running the yellow/amber in the back is technically wrong, though the level of enforcement may be in question.
Called to get red bulbs vice amber. Apparently The bulbs do not come in red, and there are no red lens covers either, strange.
Any help with a part number would be appreciated. Someone somewhere has to have crossed this bridge before me. Thanks, Zeke

Terrible solution, but you could always get white lenses and cut some red gel to put in between that and the white bulb.

I agree that would not be an ideal solution. Hopefully it will not come to that. Hard to believe it is this difficult to find either a red bulb or a clear bulb and red lens. Though I have a line at a scooter store, keep you posted.

Zeke,

Many years ago, I would order my red turn signal bulbs from this company : http://www.lightlens.com/coloredbulbs.htm

Haven't used them in years and I notice they no longer carry the bulb I used for my R1150R - a LB1156R No Fade Bulb. They do carry red LED lights but I have no idea if they would fit. Scroll down and you'll see they carry clear bulbs.

Get red LED bulbs...

There are a number of companies on the internet selling LED bulbs. superbrightleds.com
http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/ ... -turn.html
You will need a digital flasher or load unit to use the LED bulbs, I haven't been down that road yet...
Superbright sells both.

Guess who carries the bulb.......your friendly neighborhood Harley Davidson dealer. Bulb 1156 in red my local shop has 'lots of them' in stock.
Should I go there by car, would it be weird to ride my RR there.

If for some reason you wanted to drop some extra coin for LEDs, I just found this.

WOW those do look really nice compared to the other stuff I have located. I could get like 2 or 3 sets for of the regulars for that much though, but I do like the concept of the LED. Being a direct replacment is nice too so no need to deal with that load modulating thing or whatever.
I have located some others on line for 2 bucks per bulb, but then they dingle you with a $10 shipping charge. I am just going to hit the HD dealer and be done with it.

Sounds like a good idea. I never thought about mine, like I said, but I'd have to buy the clear lenses first, and I recall they weren't cheap either. I'll wait for now, as I've had it this way for three years probably!

I did the same mod your talking about. I painted the inside of the amber lens with "Stained glass paint" It worked real good. Hard to tell the lens were ever amber now.

Really, to make it red? Good idea, I assume I could get that at an art supply store. I may just do that!

I used Krylon stained glass paint on mine. 2 coats on the inside of the lens. It changes the color of the standard amber lens enough that you have a hard time telling they were ever amber. I dare say that unless someone points out that they were amber once, you wouldn't notice, and neither will the LEO's. I did this 5 years ago, they have held up well. I paid about $6 for a can 5 years ago. Much cheaper then the other alternatives, and it works just as good.

Well I just parted with the $16 bucks and change to get the red bulbs. I'll let you guys know if they explode or anything upon installation, but hopefully things will be uneventful.

Speaking of LED bulbs, I've seen some micro-LED turn signals that replace the entire turn signal that are quite tiny and unobtrusive. Problem is, I can't remember where I saw them. Can anyone refresh my memory?

EDITED:

It was on omg1010's (Oliver's) R1100R. They were Kellerman Micro 1000 LED turnsignals. I might get me a set...
