Update on screen experiments...
I decided to give the sport screen one last chance today. I've heard of people cutting it down, but that worries me. What if it doesn't work? I just ruined a part that could fetch some decent bucks on eBay...
So, I made a mockup screen with some acrylic sheet I had in the garage. Heated it and shaped it over a wastebasket to make it curved. Cut to height and duct-taped on the sport screen bracket. The purpose was simply to check out shorter heights. After a few rides and a few cuts, I became confident that a sport screen height at about 1 cm above the top of the instrument cluster would not throw noisy air at the base of my helmet.
So I taped up the sport screen, marked a line carefully, and cut it with a jigsaw. Sanded the edge smooth and mounted it up.
Success! I get a little less wind on my torso (than with no screen) and my head is in quiet smooth air. It's still a naked bike feel -- not going to be fun for 4-5 hour days. But, it's great for the other 360 days a year when I'm not on the superslab for a half a day at a time. Plus, I really like the look of the blacked-out sport screen on my bike (pinstriped black model).

I suppose I am one of the lucky ones. My Ztechnic tall screen (18 1/2") works fine for me in Winter riding. Shields the body and no appreciable buffeting by the wind. I also have a cut down version of the same screen for warm weather riding. That way I do not have to change out the hardware to install the sports screen that came with the bike. I can not tell the difference in wind buffeting between the BMW sports screen and my cut down version of the Ztechnic. I am new to your forum and have found a wealth of information here by lurking. I love my 08 R1200R. I have had it for about a year and put about 7K on it.

Hi Ultralt, I have the Ztechnic screen also and am curious as to how tall your cut-down version is. I think I would be willing to cut it down some also.
Thanks

pics of cutdown screen...
I cleaned off the black paint to cut it. It will be painted black again...

The Corona and skateboards give some indication of the weather -- 78 degrees today here.
