So I got my new for me 2007 R1200R

Post by cardingtr »

So I got my bike in shipped from Chicago last friday. Got the TX inspection and headed straight to DMV to process the title.
While I was at the counter, a sheriff tapped my back and said, "Sir, somebody hit your bike at the parking lot".
So the valve cover protectors are scratched up, left valve cover fins broke, right foot pegs feelers broke, right rear turn signal scratched and other little scratches on the right side. The bike was hit from the left and tipped by impact to the right and was dragged about 10 feet.
Nice, very nice for the first day I got it.

Bummer! I'll have to watch it when I go to the DMV for my plates in a couple of weeks.
Good luck and I hope it turns out OK.

I hope you got all the info on the driver who hit your bike. Terrible, really bad.

Good thing a witness, she tried to honk to the driver that she is about to hit my bike, stayed put, called the cops and got all the info (names, insurance).
The insurance rep will be calling me soon to assess damage for claim. Actually it's not too bad. The engine protector did its part and the engine itself worked like a slider. Now I have to make sure the engine integrity is not compromised as well as the frame.
It's a rough start.

Your insurance company is going to love you.

After they (dealer) fix the bike, go over it with a fine tooth comb and make sure that every thing with so much as a scratch is replaced with a new part. If you have the information of the driver that hit you (and hopefully they have insurance) then your insurance company will approve everything as the other company will be paying for it. Seeing as the bike had damage on both sides all damage ( or faults) on the bike can be claimed as accident damage.
I ended up with an extra Parabellum Fairing, new extra set of GS hand guards, extra set of driving lights, set of bags, mirrors and engine guards. All had very minor damage (easily fixed) but my dealer insisted on new parts and I got the old stuff.
Good Luck, hopefully the major damage will be not having your bike for a while.
The above is based on an accident I recently had and my experience from that accident, yours may be different.

BTW: None of the stuff is for sale. [-X

Now here is the thing...

She got insurance so I'm sure they will pay.
I'm about 250 miles from the nearest BMW dealership. There are other motorcycle dealership in town and smaller motorcycle shops that I actually trust more. Can a non-BMW motorcycle dealership or smaller shop do the estimate and insurance related work? Anyone has any experience with it?

Ask the insurance adjuster what shops in the area he has worked with, it goes a lot easier if the shop has worked with the insurance company in the past. My BMW dealer took on Ducati a few years ago and the adjuster said he's been in weekly contact with the guys in the BMW/Ducati shop ever since. Everybody was on a first name basis and things went smoothly.
Sounds like your not going to be involved with mechanical problems just bolt on bodywork, seems like a good local shop could do it.
