Windshield success

For those considering an aftermarket windshield, i though it would be helpful to report my experience. Today I installed a X-Large CalSci windshield on my 2009 R1200R with the Don C tilt block (thanks Don).

According to recent measurements, I am 5' 11.5 inches with a 31 inch inseam, and I sit on a standard seat pan that has been custom re-covered by Rick Mayer.

With this setup the wind blast can just be heard at the top of my helmet, and the noise (which isn't annoying) disappears if I hunker down by about 1 inch or less. The wind is mostly off my shoulders too. I felt no need for earplugs at highway speeds, but although I forgot to put them in today I will probably continue to use them anyway. I can now hear the engine and the tyres - a bunch of new and strange noises.

So, the bottom line is that I am very happy with this setup so far. Much better for winter riding than my sport screen, which is sitting in the garage ready for use when summer returns.

Thanks again to Don C for his tilt block, and to all the rest who have taken the trouble to post their experience and advice so that people like me can get it pretty much right first time.

Based on the urging I got from this board, I worked on the bracket some more and got it to fit in the bottom channel. Got a little vibration on some rough pavement in the mountains, but the X-tra tall windscreen and Doc C tilt block were rock solid on the interstate at 120. I am 5'11" with a 30" inseam, and I can see over the windshield and don't notice much wind. Be sure and call Cal Sci if you order, because they are recommend taller windshields if you use the tilt block. The cleaner that came with the Cal Sci works great too.

The Cal Sci product is great. I used it on my '07 K1200GT. I now have 2011 R1200R and the BMW bracket they reference does not fit. The dealer has ordered another BMW brackey that appears like it will fit. It is on backorder from Germany so the Cal Sci sits in the garage. In order to remove the lower support from the sport shiled that came with the bike I needed to remove the headlight to access the screws from the bottom up. This may cause me to leave the Cal Sci on year-round.

Unfortunately the Cal Sci screen didn't work for me. But I did want to say that Cal Sci is a stand up company. They gave me a full refund with no questions asked upon return. I'm genuinely sorry I had to return it as they seemed very nice and helpful.

I'm looking for a deflector to add to my C Bailey... no luck so far - one German firm out of stock. Same supplier stuff out of stock at TT...

What kind of helmet are you wearing? I have the exact set up and it works best of many efforts; no buffeting but I still hear the wind coming up from in front of the tank and beneath the windshied. Did a 300 mile round trip slap run last weekend, and it was OK; used ear plugs. These ain't RT's but I don't want no RT.
