R1100r - can I use an exhaust from a r1200gs

Post by snarly »

Hi,
I want to explore exhaust systems on my r1100r.
Don't want to commit a lot of money but do want to see what works and sounds good.

My r1100r is very quiet - I am used to vance & hines on a custom sportster.
Looking for louder, deeper - but not the whine of a sport bike.

I found a used Remus sport exhaust from a r1200gs - does anyone know if this is compatible with my r1100r?

Any one else experiment with slipons, etc?
How about supertrapp universal?

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

the 1200 exhausts are not compatible to the 1100 models. They simply don't fit. Try getting some aftermarket stuff for your 1100 model if you want to avoid a lot of welding .... Zach, SR Racing and others are your friends. However beware, most of them produce a lot of noise and cost engine power ...

Oliver,
You sir are a true gentleman!

Thanks again for taking the time to respond to my "newbie" posts with useful information.

I just connected you with your amazing r1100r I saw pics of when I first started considering getting this bike.

Chris, my pleasure. I also started gathering plenty of info through the various forums. My advantage is that I am German and thus I can read all the stuff in the German forums (and that is where you find plenty of info ...). Anyway, keep asking and I am sure there'll be always somebody to answer you. There is plenty of experts around here as well ...

Would be most grateful if you would send links to any German forums that would be of interest to an R1100R rider.

Thanks!

The most frequented forum is this one http://www.boxer-forum.de/
Then we have this one http://www.bmw-bike-forum.info/index.php

And the most valuable source for technical info is this one http://www.powerboxer.de/ (this is not a forum but a compilation of technical know-how about the airheads, oilheads and hexheads).

No promises, cause I have no idea if I am going to dislike the "Two Brothers" exhaust that is on the R1100RL that I am supposed to be getting this week. I have a tendency to want to keep the bike stock, and my neighbors have always appreciated my quiet bike. If you are interested (and everything else works out for me), I will contact you after I have decided.

Just thought you might want to keep this possibility in mind!

Twinrider,

Thanks for the post.

Let me know what you end up doing - my stock exhaust is in pretty good shape and the bike is stock.

Very quiet. I just replaced the Hall sensor, alternator belt, pulley and adjusted the valves.

I am in Jersey City, NJ - where are you?

Hi, Chris!

I'm in Minneapolis. The purchase was completed this morning and I should have the bike by late Friday.

I have no idea what I have gotten myself into buying an 1100R without ever having ridden one. If it doesn't work out, I probably will go back to an F650gs Single. But if it isn't too much hassle, I will probably want to switch exhausts.

I will let you know after this weekend!

Tom,
I did a crazy thing as well getting my r1100r....I put an add in Craigslist to sell an old mercedes 380sl and ended up trading it for this bike.

At the time I had a Harley sportster and a couple of scooters, but loved the look of this bike, driveshaft, etc and did the trade. Don't think I would have ever gotten a beemer otherwise.

I still have the sporty, have had a few challenges with the beemer, but am happy overall.

My main problems seemed to all be due to a bad Hall Sensor - unreal the amount of problems this thing has caused for a lot of these bikes. It is a (relatively) easy fix.

Good luck with bike and post a pic when you get a chance.

Hey,

I think most people would agree that if we were sane ... (Just sayin' ...)

Here are a couple of pics that were sent to me by the previous owner.

Chris -

Have you done the exhaust swap yet?

I've got an aftermarket exhaust on my 95 R1100R, but I want to go back to stock. If you're interested in selling your stock exhaust, let me know.

Hi, Chris!

It looks like I am leaning towards selling the whole bike because of seating/comfort issues, but I haven't come to a final decision. So, if that is the case, I'm not going to bother with swapping out the exhaust. I can see why you might want to go this direction. The Two Brothers really makes this bike snappy and gutty.

Anyway, if I do sell it, I will definitely pass your name on to the new owner

And here is a little bit better picture of the exhaust:

Or more pics via my SMUGMUG Account.

Will keep you updated!

Hi TwinRider.

I had a look at the other piccies, and that is a sweet looking bit of kit.

If I lived vaguely within cooee of you, I'd offer to buy it, if you decide to sell, but, postage to Australia would be an absolute killer.

Just a wee warning, and forgive me if you knew this already, but.... the standard exhaust system for an R1100R has an up swept muffler. This only allows for a reduced size pannier to be fitted. In fact some owners change to the lower muffler arrangement, specifically to allow the use of more useful panniers, with left and right boxes being about the same capacity.

I can't tell from the pictures, but think you have the large left hand pannier.

Also, the pannier locating lub, mounted from the left side passenger foot peg is slightly different in position, depending on which pannier type you are using.

After way to much time on youtube and the web.....I just ordered the two brothers exhaust #005-920406m.

Delivery included for $425 new in box....

Says it slips on and replaces the cat and is built for existing oxygen sensor with no other mods needed.

Came down to Remus or this - Remus sounds tinny and high.

I will keep stock pieces in case.
