Just committed to 2012 red r1200r built on aug 22

Post by clarksas »

Well I finally did it. I stopped thinking about it and put a deposit down on a candy apple red r1200r. I will be trading in my 2007 Yamaha FZ6. A very fun bike but must say that I am really excited about this bike. I rode a r1150r a few weeks back and really liked it. I believe this 2012 will be that good and more. I am looking forward to some great road trips on this bike. I opted out of the ESA or whatever that is and got the standard with heated grips and saddle bag mounts. The Abs and tcs are now standard. Dealers are not coming down much from msrp but I did get the turn signals and rear brake light as led which will be cool. I know I am paying a lot for this bike but it seems to be the dream bike.

Looking forward to the ride.

Oh, so sorry, my friend! There is no vaccine for the deadly farkle virus that will surely strike you; I'm at $4800 and counting... But welcome to the forum! And ride safe!

Thanks for the welcome. And what do you suggest or predict those first farklers to be? I know the side cases are in my future. The tinted sport screen looks cool. Hmm... A lighter better muffler will have to be on the list. What about that seat? Oh gosh, that gps might be a good idea. Aaaaah! Maybe I better cancel that order?

I have a 2010 with some factory farkles, but I added a Kaoko throttle lock and love it. If you ever do a day on the slab, it'll be worth it.
Congrats. This is the best BMW and it does it all.

Welcome! I have not calculated the cost of my farkles, since it would probably upset my wife too much.

My latest farkle is the Skene P3 LED flashing brake lights. A great item to increase conspicuity.

Enjoy your new bike!

Welcome to the board.

I had an '05 FZ6 before the Roadster. The FZ was a fine bike, never had a problem, but it didn't animate me a whole lot for having fun with it. With the Roadster I go on 1-2 overnight trips each month. It feels a lot more solid all around, and the cases are great for traveling. They came on the bike, and I picked up a few other extras that improved the bike's usability for me: touring screen, Rick Mayer saddle, top case for commuting.

I had both bikes for a while, and after getting used to the Roadster's brakes and front suspension I truly no longer enjoyed riding the FZ.

I also tried several R1150R but found the R1200R to feel more 'right' for me immediately when I got on it.

I notice a couple of you from Raleigh Durham area. I am in Raleigh. I look forward to seeing you out on the roads. Do you ride with any clubs? I will post pics as soon as I get possession of the bike which is expected to be around 3rd week of September. It is being delivered from the factory in Germany. I am working with dealer to decide on my starter farkles as he is throwing some into the deal since he would not back off the MSRP. I like the tinted sport screen for looks but not sure how effective it would be.

Did you buy you bike from Capitol BMW? I drove from Cleveland, Ohio to buy my used 2008 from Greg Murphy at Capitol BMW in Raleigh N.C.. Greg is a good guy and Capitol looks to be a good dealership.

I know there are local clubs, but I an not a member of any and don't know about their quality. I have seen ads on Craigslist from a BMW-specific club, but I forgot the name.

A new seat or Airhawk should be one of your first purchases. Very few people can handle the stock seat for more than an hour or so per past posts.

I did indeed purchase from Greg at Capitol BMW. I couldn't convince him to come down on the price but still wanted to do business with him and he is making is right. I work with a number of guys who have purchased and/or get the BMWs serviced at Capitol BMW and they are all very pleased so they appear to be doing something right.

I have at least 2-3 weeks to wait on delivery but I am sure it will be well worth it.

I don't know what an Airhawk is but i will look it up. I figure that a seat is in my future which is why I made no effort to get a different seat for this bike as there are choice of low, high, sport and high comfort. I bought a Corbin for my previous bike and although it is a huge improvement over the stock I will probably look around at other options for the R12R.

I have just completed a 2200 mile trip using the sport screen and I like it. It still has the naked bike feel, it keeps the brunt of the wind off of your chest and still lets plenty of air hit you to keep you cool. Well as cool as you can be in 95+. :) My only issue was that on several occasions, I got stinging creatures directly into my opened zipper on my Streetguard suit. I think the touring screen might have prevented that since it is taller but am unsure as to whether the ride would have been as cool. It is all a trade off of some sort.

It comes with the comfort seat as standard - I can't get my 28" inseam over the pillion hump so the next farkle is the sports seat 8-[

Clarksas,
I also have a deposit down on a 2012 R1200R but it looks like my delivery is running about a month after yours :(
I did get the turn signals and rear brake light as led which will be cool.
LED indicators and brake sounds like a great idea… hummm, might have to ask my dealer about that…
Congratulations on the new bike !

Re: Local NC BMW Clubs

Post by fastdogs2 »

Clarksas,

Sorry, if this is Off Topic, but the man asked about local BMW clubs in Raleigh.

There is a local club in Raleigh called the "Tarheel Travelers." I am not a member.

You may also want to hook up with riders on Sunday mornings at the breakfast shop next to the Carolina Brewery at the intersection of Hwy 64 and 15/501, north of Pittsboro. It is a good spot for coffee and conversation. Usually there are about 50-100 bikes there. All makes, BMW included.

Or, you can send me a personal message and I will be glad to introduce you to some great roads near Jordan Lake and west of Chapel Hill.
