'Off-road' looking tyres in 120/70/17 & 180/55/17

Apart from the Pirelli Scorpions, has anyone tried any other "off-road" style tyres on the oilheads??

I have seen a 1050 Tiger and a couple Uly's with the Pirelli Scorpion Trail in 180. If I keep my bike long enough for new rubber, that is what I plan on mounting.

Good question. Looks like it's Pirellis or nothing.

Just checked the current dual-sport tire list for Cycle Gear, then confirmed tire sizes on mfr sites:

Avon Distanzia
Bridgestone Battlewing
Bridgestone Trail Wing
Conti TKC80
Conti Trail Attack
Dunlops
Metzeler Tourance
Michelin Anakee

None of these have the 120 & 180 for 17" wheels. But all have GS sizes of course.

The other tire I have seen on the Tiger and Uly: Dunlop 616

Whoops, forgot that Dunlop. Check the BadWeb board, but I want to say the rear tire life was short for Uly application per guys in local Buell club.

I spoke to a guy at work that said the same thing. He is trying to wear out the sync and mount the trail.

Hmm - I've had the Sync before - it was "ok" IIRC.

not much choice is there.... :(

Hi RB....

I just got back from my europe bash on Saturday (3100 miles in 10 days) - I'd slung on a pair of Metz Z6 for the jaunt (they seem ok so far btw - if marginally less grippy in damp than other stuff I've had on). I like the mileages that people seem to get out of these 'on-road' pseudo knobbly things - is this why you're considering them instead of coventional road rubber - the search for better mileage?

BTW - If you put in the BMW Rockster in the Pirelli site - it says it does not have compatible tyres in the Scorpion Trail tyre - even though they have the correct front and rear size fitment!

If you (or anyone) does fit some of these, I'd be most interested in hearing how you got on with them!

I've had a Scorpion Sync on the rear before and it handled fine, just didn't last particularly long tbh. I also have a penchant for taking the bike offroad or up muddy /slushy/icy roads and figure the off-road tread may be helpful.

In the end though it all comes down to cost.

I've had the Dunlop 616 on the rear of my Rockster all summer. About 4000 miles. Its wearing well, and sticks well. The down side may be that the diameter is less than a Z6. I need about 300 rpm more to get the same road speed. But in the mountains this gives a little more power.

ok - I looked into the Scorpion Trails, but they were so friggin' expensive I went with Diablo Stradas again!

A guy I used to work with has some Dunlop 616's on his R1100 and he really likes them. My rear Dunlop RoadSmart II is developing a flat spot, either from too much acceloration or the boring roads I travel on, so I may switch to the 616 in the near future.
