Clutch slave cylinder/easy removal for checking?

Post by R1150Rclean »

Everything is fine, but given the previous owner did not have the fluids replaced regularly, I was thinking of pulling out the slave cylinder to check on it. Looks like the rear tire has to come off, and the rear shock (is that easy to remove?), can I get by with just those two?

Any time I pulled the slave, it was on the way to pull the transmission. I checked the manual, and it says to pull the muffler too. Do you have the pdf manual? It steps you through it pretty well. You have to lever the rear frame up (but only 15mm). I think that's to allow the lower shock mount rod to slide out. You won't have to pull the entire rear shock, just the bottom mount.
It may be a little more involved than you hoped, but it won't be that bad.
Personally, I would flush the fluid and forget it unless I had some reason to take a look. If you do go ahead and pull it, consider doing CycleRob's mod to the slave housing that allows any leakage to go harmlessly away rather than heading over to the clutch and doing damage. I'm not 100% sure it can be done while the tranny is on the bike, but you could drill a small drain hole on the underside for sure.

Okay, thanks for the information. I do have the hard copy of the Chiltons manual, but was hoping their was a short cut.
