CeeBaileys "Sport Shield" any one try one yet?

Post by ammolab »

Since this shield will mount on the factory BMW "Sport" brackets that many of us have.... I was
looking for a rider report.

I find many full size shields a bit much, and the BMW Sport Shield I have maybe a bit too little.

I hope the Cee Baileys Sport shield is my Goldilocks "Just Right"! Any of you trying one?

That looks pretty nice. I'd like a report on it too.

I took my sport shield and bracket off yesterday to make room for my MRA screen.

Had I know CeeBailey did that screen I'd have gladly been the guinea pig

Hello, I just purchased 3 ZTechnik different size windshields from National Cycle near Chicago. One mounting bracket set fits all 3 size shields. Ane the mounting brackets were a piece of cake to install on my 2011 R1200R. It,s very easy to change between the different windshields. I talked with the rep from National Cycle and he made me a package deal, one mounting bracket kit and all three windshields for right at $700. The different ones I bought were the dark tint Sport Z2443, light tint Sport touring Z2442 amd a clear Tall touring Z2444. Kinda expensive but good quality. National Cycle has photos of their shields mounted on R1200R's. http://www.nationalcycle.com

I know we've beat cee baileys products to death on here but no one seemed to have answered the question posed on this thread. For the newer members I wound up loaning my bide to CB's as a test bed for their newest R12R shield. As a result of that Joe gave me a bunch of stuff including a copy of this sport shield with bracket. Since I have no life I bolted this one on finally and have been riding around for a few days. I have to say I actually like it quite a bit (actually surprised how much I like it). Its gives a nice torso break. The wind hits me right at my shoulders and it actually has this taking pressure off my arms effect. I wind rumbles just at the base of my helmet but is not too intrusive. I know I will draw fire for this but I think I like it better than the BMW touring screen. If you haven't popped for the expensive BMW touring bracket and have the sport bracket I wouldn't hesitate to to buy this considering the BMW tour set up is $400 or more. Knowing what I know now I might even say to those with a bigger shield that this is a decent summer set up worth possibly pursuing. Hope this gives an answer.

I ordered the Z-Technic mid-height sport-touring windshield last week, and was able to install it earlier this week. I've had a chance to go for two decent length rides so far and really like the results. I'm a relatively new R1200R owner, and my only other windshield experience is the BMW sport screen that came on the bike.

Anyway, I'm 5'7" with a 29" inseam and the windshield height is about perfect for me. The shield comes up to about the chinbar of my Shoei full-face, and the wind blast hits a point between the top of the face shield and the top of the helmet. I get some noise, but not much in the way of buffeting. It also takes the wind pressure off most of my torso.

My rides included speeds up to a bit over 70 mph, and a couple of stretches on an interstate with moderate truck traffic. Dead stable at the speeds I rode, and minimal effect from the trucks' slipstreams. There was one truck, though, that was throwing off exceptionally "dirty" air, but all the others were OK.

As mentioned by others, quality is top-notch.

Time will tell whether this is a long-term solution for me, but I am very optimistic.

Sorry for the poor framing in this pic. I'll try again when I get a chance.

I finally bit the bullet and bought a Cee Bailey sport shield. Since I already had a BMW sport shield, it was only $100 for the clear version to fit the sport bracket. So far it seems to be a pretty acceptable small shield. It allows comfortable cruising in clear air up to 80MPH. When following boxy vehicles like SUVs and pickups it doesn't provide much protection from the turbulence but that's about what you would expect from a small screen. For my seating position (I have a BMW tall comfort seat) the shield in its normal position is a bit noisy. I have used some longer screws and spacers to add more tilt to the screen and that eliminated the worst of the wind noise. The screws and long spacers are not a great fit so I will need to find an alternative method for angling the screen, does anyone know if the sport bracket can be angled like the tall brackets?

I ordered the ZTechnik mid-size (like one above) and smaller sportscreen and will be picking up tomorrow. Will install and have a 400 mile ride on Saturday. Couldn't decide which screen to get so I talked to them at ZTechnik and orderd the sportscreen and ordered the larger "screen only" as they use the same mounting hardware. Both screens and mounting hardware was only $450 which is pretty good for 2 screens IMHO.

Will try the larger screen Saturday and then try the smaller sportscreen. Hopefully they work as well for me as the reports I have been hearing.

Cheers,
Dan

Bought my R1200R the middle of last month and ordered one of these Ceebailey sport screens first thing, waited for delivery, used it almost a full week and then left the engine running and the bike on the kickstand and it rolled over and broke the screen, so I didn't post here mostly from embarrassment.

Put the OEM sport screen back on, reordered and rode with the OEM.

Got my Ceebailey screen last week and could not wait to put it back on.

The verdict is in...

It takes all the buffeting away from my chest and makes the ride more enjoyable. No question.

Turbulence is not so great. I believe it could benefit from a laminar lip on the top or that and/or an extra inch of height.

I'm OK with the wind noise as a trade off to remove the buffeting.

I have custom silicone ear plugs and a Shoei X 11 & a Shoei 1000. I plan on trying the 1000 soon to see if it is a bit quieter.

All in all I like this windscreen. For $100 it's the sleeper deal, bolts right onto the existing sport frame and looks good.

I have observed a few large bugs headed straight at my faceplate getting shot right over my head by the slipstream, so it's working.

Thanks for such a detailed post. I was eyeing on the Cee Bailey's Sports Shield for a while. And it is the reason I would want to order the BMW Sports Shield. I was think of switching to the CB's Sports Shield for touring and use the BMW's for my daily commutes (it is hot all year long in Singapore). All other options doesn't seems to allow me to do that, except if I remove the mounting brackets, but that will be a pain.

I have one of the Cee Bailey sport shields as well. I am 5'11" and use a BMW high comfort seat. It makes highway speeds up to at least 80 MPH reasonable. It doesn't block turbulence from boxy vehicles as well as the CalSci shield I had on my GS, but for the price it's a reasonable option. Protection in still air is surprisingly good. As initially installed I found the windshield a bit noisy and have shimmed the bottom of the shield out a bit with longer screws and a couple of nylon spacers. That reduced the nose quite a lot. The shimming isn't a great solution as it affects the fit. If the bracket allows it, I will probably lose the shims and tilt the bracket. Shortening the shield by an inch might also work but I consider that a last resort.

Does anyone know if the sport bracket allows tilting like the touring bracket does?

If you are asking about the 2007-20010 sport bracket, the answer is yes, it can be tilted. It will take quite a bit of bending of the tubing to keep the lower loop captured in its support with the thicker tilt blocks.

Here's a couple images of my sport screen. I wasn't taking these shots for the sake of the windscreen, so they're not the best examples, but they do show the screen.

Hope this helps.

Ok, I'm willing to give the CeeBailey Sport a try. I have several questions about the whole subject but will post them in another thread.

I know that we won't be looking through it, so is the dark or light gray tinting strictly for aesthetics?

This thread is very interesting and we can save quite a bit of money by learning from the different experiences. After all, each rider positions himself differently on the bike and we all have different body structures, which possibly one successful experience might not have the same results for all riders. However, these experiences here are great to read. By the way, Has anyone tried the Wunderlich Vario Ergo screen. I am tempted to test but it would be nice if any one can tell an experience. Great thanks for all the reports, they help a lot. :D

My (clear) CB Sport Shield arrived last week and I've ridden with it for about 4 days now.

Installation was trivial since the stock mounting bracket was already on: just take BMW sport shield off and install the CB. The mounting holes on the shield seemed a bit off so one screw did not go in flush, but that could be my own error.

I agree with Snapping Twig and for me it is a nicer ride over the stock sport. It is definitely keeping the air off my chest so it's easier riding highway speeds, which is what I'm doing most of the time.

I'm not sure if I'm getting the "air flowing over the helmet" effect. I'm definitely getting air at the neck/base of helmet and still get some bugs on neck and visor. (Less than before? Dunno.) The noise level also seems a bit higher but I'm experimenting with keeping the helmet top vent closed which seems to help.

Another thing I'm not sure of is any added turbulence. There are times when I thought I felt the bike affected a bit more than without it but they are few and far between, and it's been very windy lately.

Relevant bike/rider details:
5'10" with short inseam (@27" if you stop mid-ankle, 29" to floor)
Low comfort seat (I think)
Shoei Multitec helmet

Hope this helps anyone else thinking of getting one.
