I ordered a Boosterplug

Post by slowtorque »

Coming from Denmark, of all places. My bike runs great currently, but I just had to try one. Hope I didn't waste my money. We'll see. Will report back.

Purchased one of these for my '04 1150 Rockster a few months ago. 10 mins installation, easy peasy. So far so good and money well spent in my opinion. It wont transform your bike and i would reckon a dyno test wouldnt show any great gains in power.
However bike instantly feels torquier and definitely more responsive. I find you have to rev it less to get it really going.
Personally though I have found cold starts to be a trickier affair as bike is a tad more reluctant to start.
Good luck with it...

I ordered my Boosterplug about a month ago and installed in about twenty minutes. Just went for my first ride after installing and noticed a distinct improvement in response and seat of the pants power. One of the best modifications I've spent money on. I'm curious - where did you position your sensor?

Testimony for this product is positive enough so maybe it's worth a try for $150, but maybe not too. I bit, installed it in minutes and took a ride. Then several. Surge may have been slightly better when the engine was cold (5-10 miles) but after that it was worse if anything. It's in the bin with other unsatisfactory mods. I'm sorry to see its promotion in the latest issue of BMW ON because I don't think it's worth the bucks. My RR is not a terrible surger, and my solution has been to keep the revs up a bit.

I mounted the sensor on the telelever strut. I can recall the instructions mentioning to ensure it is kept in the airflow but as far away from the engine as possible.
I too was kind of skeptical prior to purchase but for the amount of money involved (think it was around eur140) thought it was good value. Hell of a lot cheaper than an aftermarket eprom chip, much easier to install and same results for half the outlay.
Will agree though, it has made no difference to curing the surging at part throttle openings. Think only solution to this is careful and precise balancing of throttle bodies...

I don't know, but I'm guessing that this 'Boosterplug' plugs into the Fusebox? Is this the same as the CCP (Cat Code Plug)? The reason I ask is....

When fishing about from this site to a link on the (I think) the UKGSer site I came across something from the sage-like 'Steptoe' from London (this is certainly old news for many so apologies, but it was new to me). The basic outline was that the Motronic has several maps built into it already, and BMW fit different plug-ins to access different maps for different countries (presumably to allow for different emissions regs, different quality fuels and so on I guess). Anyway - the plug-ins are basically just linking different terminals on the relay base in different combinations. So... Steptoe suggests that by putting in a simple link wire between terminals 5 & 6 on the CCP base, then resetting the Motronic switched it to a different ignition map, which can (and it doesn't work for all bikes) smooth out the delivery and help with surging etc. Some claimed to have a very significant improvement all around (and some didn't -but overall the majority seemed pleased with the result).

Anyway - it cost nothing to make a link up and try it, so I have. I tried a blast with it fitted, then removed the link at the roadside and tried the bike with no Cat Code Plug

It doesn't make a big difference to my bike, but it does seem to run smoother and seems to run well. Not really checked things like fuel consumption as I've only been for one (pretty fast) ride for 150-odd miles, but I don't think its changed a heck of a lot. I pulled the plugs when I got back to check mixture and the plug electrodes are clean and suggests it runs fairly lean (to be expected with Fuel Inj and emissions I'd guess), but not white suggesting too hot, and I've never had any pre-ignition pinking with my bike.

FWIW my bike is an '04 Rockster with recent stick-coils, running (mostly) on 95 octane unleaded and a Y-Piece and Remus can (31k Miles). I'm going to keep the link in for a while and see how it goes.

I have no idea if I'm talking on the right topic though - so apologies if I'm burbling nonsense and hijacking a thread! If anyone else has tried this (or similar) though it'd be interesting to hear about it.

Got mine in the mail yesterday. Waiting for Remus y-pipe. Will first install y-pipe and see how bad the popping is, if any. Then install the PP to see what difference it makes.

GWRockster - a BoosterPlug is an aftermarket electrical device (thermistor) that fools the engine control computer into thinking the temperature is lower than actual and thus spoof it into enriching the fuel mixture.

The Cat Code plug is as you mentioned, a jumper that determines which fuel map the computer references to operate the engine. Some of these maps make the engine run richer than others, so you might achieve the same effect by a different means if you select the right fuel map.

I apologize for the tangential hijack above, but it should also be mentioned that there can be long term negative consequences of enriching the fuel mixture including ruining the catalytic converter.

Thanks for the explanation Sunbeemer. Being cheap (and so far pretty happy with the way my Rock goes) I think I'll stick with the wire jumper for now.

The good news is that my Cat won't get ruined by a richer fuel mixture on account of it's in my loft with the OE Silencer, having been replaced by a Y-Piece / Remus years ago :D!
