The mounting bracket on the can appears to look like a modified OEM bracket, not the remus mount. Either way it is a PITA fitting the system it was hell figuring a way to keep the mounting point on the bike from digging into the muffler.. The headache was only fully over once I used the HT lowering parts and added the full size left inner bag. I love the sound, so went with this rather than the cat and shorty tip.

The other option is to take it to an exhaust shop and have them tweak the curve in the y-pipe.

How hot does the stock can get with the y-pipe? It would seem that the stocker is restrictive and would hold the heat compared to the through-type design of the the remus muffler.
It's that way by design. It's a CAT. That's why it's so heavy.
Not too sure what you are saying here? The OP talked about running the y-pipe (which replaces the catalytic converter) and stock muffler. The stock muffler will capture all the heat that now runs through the y-pipe and act as a heat sink. The aftermarket exhausts do not capture near the heat, thus no problems toasting your bag (or vey few issues).

Well, the distributor in California has expressed a new pipe to me and I should have it tonite. I took some measurements and determined the main issue is that the outlet pipe on the y-pipe is not fully bent so that the exhaust can be mounted close to parallel with the bike. It lacks 5 degrees or so of swing in the radius causing it to gradually diverge away from the bike. This obviously is most pronounced at the rear of the canister because the canister mount is essentially a rubber damped pivot point. I'll be able to tell right away if the replacement has the same issue. If it does, I'll see what a local exhaust shop can do for me. No way can I do without the sound (and some performance) that this delivers. It's marvelous. I do not want that CAT anywhere near my bike again.

Hope this works out for you.

The bag fitment issue gives me a little appreciation for the ZTechnik y-pipe and silencer system... At least that's one thing good about the system.

That, and it is what, a portly 1/4 pound!!!

I liked that the ZTechnik was a four piece system with springs. With a tube of exhaust sealant, it could be effectively mounted at any position you choose. :D

Well, just as I half expected, this pipe is identical to the first and will not allow bag use. I even had to space it out so that the canister did not contact the subframe. Any advice on what my other options are now for a y-pipe that will allow bag use? Not crazy about the look of the lowered pipe. REMUS is decidedly not going to work out for me. Someone mentioned Ztechnic? Does Laser still make a system? Thanks

slowtorque wrote:Best I can do right now is put the stock can back on. I am using a 5/16" spacer and the can now just clears the inside of the left bag by about 1/16" inch. I do have reflective foil tape so the proximity should not be an issue. I can't use the Remus can, at all. I like the sound better with the stock can but I wanted to use the Remus. Waiting on California time so I can call distributor. Not optimistic.
I tried that once - it burnt a hole in the REAR FACE of the bag.

Ie - NOT where the can was touching (my bags had* the factory fit heat pad on the face of the pannier that is closest to the can), but BEHIND the exit of the can. I can only theorise that the exhaust gases were so hot they were able to melt the pannier plastic when the vortexes of air-play behind the pannier allowed the gases to touch the pannier.

I've got some photos of the location of the hole somewhere - keep forgetting to put them online.

I now run a CAT with a little extender. No can at all.

I'm not completely sure it's totally legal here in the UK, but it works well, the bike runs well, it's not too noisy, the rear wheel is VERY easy to remove for new tyres, and there's no issue with the pannier (I just need to get a full-width one now). :)

I did run my bikes (I've had 2 Rocksters) with a Remus Y-piece and can, and after losing the 3rd "quietening pipe" (the tube that slots into the exhaust which deadens the sound somewhat - legally required here in UK), I realised that I actually found the bike TOO loud with the Remus bits on. Tried having the Y-piece and OE can (and burnt the pannier during a trip to France), and then gave up and ran the CAT and OE can for a year or so until I made up the little exhaust tip (from the old Y-piece actually - the mounting lug welds had broken).

Personally I don't think the bike's performance and response actually decreased with the CAT and OE can. I figure that once you're over 40,000 miles or so, the engine has loosened up a bit, and all the freer-flowing exhaust does is make the bike "feel" faster, due to it being louder.

Do you have / did the Remus pipe come with?....the small curved piece of pipe that goes between the two.? That is what I used to lower my pipe for use with a full bag, and stock muff & Cat. I have a "Y" just haven't put it on yet, but 'looks' like it will work the same?

I ended up finding a NOS Wudo exhaust lowering kit on ebay and have installed it. Though I am not crazy about the look of the lowered canister and the unfinished look now of the y-pipe to canister connection created by the WUDO elbow, this is going to have to be the way I run this now. Now to find a nice full size left bag to take advantage of having the pipe out of the way. If anyone is interested in a used Remus aluminum canister, I have one for sale, cheap.

Just buy an "inner" case rather than the whole bag. Pull the lock core, tap out the pins on the latch hooks, drill the rivets out and the multifunction box pulls right out. Replace the some 11 rivets, pins core and you are ready to roll. Taking your time, you are looking at 30 minutes.

I agree that the look of a lowered pipe leaves something to be desired, however, once you have the full size bag, life is good. One last thing.... You will need to make a bracket for the foot to sit into, or relocate the support foot.

JAS, the WUDO comes with the foot so no worries there. It's a really slick aftermarket kit. THanks

$175 plus shipping buys the REMUS can.

I live in central NC. Where would I be shipping it? I can send pics of the canister. It is not beat up at all but does have a few marks that are essentially hidden if you run system cases.

WUDO lowering kit provides the inboard foot for mounting full size bag. Directions say the plastic cap of the stock bag foot needs to be removed. Image

I'm guessing based on the shipping I have done lately that this could be accomplished for about 30 bucks. If less, I can refund the difference. I went to UC and am originally from Southeast Ohio.
