The 3.0 final drive that I used for the last 2.5 years went bad. One person claims it did not have the red locktite on it.
The gears went bad and so did the hub. The dealer that sold it does not appear to helping with the replacement both financially and finding the parts.
The bike will be going up for sale with the stock final drive installed.
I wanted a liquid cooled and chain drive bike. Tuesday I am picking up a Ducati Multistrada.
It will not be for playing in the dirt.

Re: Final drive
Problems can happen anywhere and BMW is no exception to it (but neither is Ducati!).
Was it a second-hand bike? Then I am afraid your chances for any concessions by your dealer are slim. If it was a new bike I would somewhat insist on a second look by BMW. Missing red loctite is no argument. Many riders I know just use the blue loctite and apply some color marks to see if the screw has moved or not. The non-application of red loctite should not be a reason for the final drive failing ...
The Multistrada is a very fine bike. But the chaindrive will always be a no-go for me.

Re: Final drive
I'm confused, what's the 3.0 final drive?
Would than be some sort of aftermarket FD with a different ratio, since you said the stock one is going back in?
I have a stock FD with only 17,000 miles on it if you want to buy it.
Sorry for your luck either way, sounds like you were looking for just this kind of reason to switch bikes anyway, have fun on your Ducati.

Re: Final drive
I bought the bike new in 2008. Max BMW offered a lower rear ratio from the stock 2.75
They offered 2.91 and 3.0 ratios. I wanted the lower gearing so I went with the 3.0
I found a used final drive on ebay and bought it, sent it to Max BMW and they installed the 3.0 gears and shipped it to me.
It was fantastic in stop and go traffic with two up. Then after 8,700 miles it came apart and also ruined the hub.
Max BMW can't find a 3.0 and it would cost more the second time than the first because they need to order a new hub along with the gears.
With the Multistrada I can worry about chain tension and lubing the chain along with replacing sprockets and chains from time to time.
I can also add three or four teeth to the rear sprocket at a very reasonable price to get the ratio I want.
And you are right. I was looking for a reason to get a new bike. The multi fits me perfectly.
Now with over 200 miles I realize how great a bike it is. I am also have thought of doing off road with it.
It is not even close to a GS off road but it is better that 'my' R.
By that I mean that if I were a much better rider the R would have done more off road.

Re: Final drive
Thanks for the reply, now I understand.
Let a little air out of your tires and go explore some fire roads if you're interested, I've seen folks pretty far off the beaten path on the Ducati's in Death Valley, they have the potential just like the R for some fun light duty dirt action. Stand up and balance with your feet instead of your butt.
Careful though, "exploring" on a big bike can lead to a dirt riding addiction and you can end up in places like I did last weekend.

Cheers
