Just looking for some opinions here. I have the chance to purchase one of these two bikes and they are both listed for about the same price (~$4,500 which I think is too much). What do you guys and gals think? Here are the contenders:
1999 r1100r: 12,000 miles and immaculate with service records. Owned by a BMW guy. No ABS or heated grips. Full windshield and bags
vs.
2002 r1150r: 24,000 miles, service records. ABS and heated grips. Had a bit of road rash on bags and cylinder heads on both sides. To me, that is the scary part.
Leaning toward the r1100r. Just wondering if the bigger engine, ABS and grips and 3 years newer is worth it.
Lotta money for the '99 1100. The 'gravel rash' on the heads of the 1150 don't look to be caused
by a drop even stationary, more like stone chips. Personally I don't like ABS but different folks do.
You really need a spin on both to see which you prefer.

I'm in the UK with a non-ABS 1150R and I love it....Good luck with whatever you decide upon.
So what's the owner of the 1150R say about the rash? I say go lean towards it, you'll like the extra gear and heated grips, FWIW my buddy after riding mine sold his '99 1100 and got a 2004 1150R. Not matter how low mi and good condtion the 1100 is, thats an old bike for over $4k.

I would go for the R1100R. I paid 4750 Euro's for my 1999 R1100R with 35000 miles on it. I am very happy with mine and I have really improved this bike.
I have spend a lot of money on mine but I am sure that this bike will keep its value. I am slowly changing mine into a new bike.
The R1150R has slid along the road. Look at the plug covers and the rear pannier.
If it was sold cheaply with no oil leaks and a straight frame then those cosmetics could be painted over.
The exposed oil coolers on an R1100R are ugly and get kicked and damaged easily. I know- a one day loan put me off.
Both bikes are overpriced and potential/repair costs need to be factored in to your bids.
Check the latch hooks on the scuffed bag on the R1150R for cracks and/or weaknesses.
(The 2 black plastic hooks on the bag that attach the bag to the rail)
If the bag hit the ground attached at any speed they can develop cracks as they take the force and full weight of the bike.
You won't know it until months later when the hook snaps under load and speed.
That scuff looks too familiar.
I laid mine down 7 years ago, and my left bag "survived" the crash, or so I thought.
Until the folllowing summer when the hairline crack I missed turned into a snap crackle pop on the highway.
The rust on the front caliper means parked in the rain too much.
