I just bought a skid plate from ebay and paid forty including shipping. It came in yesterday and have not picked it up yet. The picture I saw from you're post looks better than the picture I bought. Having paid the forty dollars I then asked if the bolts came with it. Stupid me. There are four bolts, two spacers on the front, and a bracket on the back.

About $45.00 in parts I'll have to buy. So at 85.00 spent and the new is $105.00. For fifteen dollars more I could have bought a new one. But I have a skid plate and thought my bike needed one for some time.

Robert - check your math. The new plate is $106 then you'll still have to buy the mounting hardware. So it seems to me that you saved around $65.

Bill - the one on E-bay has what seems to be the 07 GS mounting hardware on it. Check the fiche on the 07 and 08 they're different. I used the 07 hardware and it works just fine.

Seller says the skid plate is off an '08 GSA. Looks as if I might need more parts (6, 7 and 8 ). Or maybe all the mounting hardware will be in the box. It'll be like Christmas morning.

The hex shaped mounting studs on the back say it's an 07 (years are useless as the change is by serial number), I'm sure you'll check what the bottom of your engine looks like before you order. BTW: Don't forget the Locktite



I thought the skid plate was just for show till I rolled by bike off the lift without attaching the ramp. The bikeslammed down right on the skid plate. I can only guess what that would have done to the oil filter and whatever it mounts to. My fault -- senior citizen brain fart. I had to gather some neighbors to lift the back of the bike and roll it back on the lift.

I've had mine on for about 50K and the bottom shows signs of being hit by some nasty stuff, it's surprising because while I'll go down a dirt or gravel road I don't go crashing through the wilderness. The bottom of the engine however looks like new.

The plate listed on ebay has a part number of 11 11 7 717 743 and max bmw shows that part number uses both hardware listed above. I have an email in for the seller. I asked him for which year the plate came from. I'm going to go check the under side of the boxer's block to see which hardware I need.

My math was wrong and I actually did save about a third of the new cost.

Well, the spacer (4) mounting option would be cheaper, if that's not included in the box. I didn't see the spacer in the seller's ebay photos.

I've got blue Loctite. You think it's sufficient for the four threads?

Looking at the part number 11 11 7 717 743 at max bmw ..they show the different hardware fit the same plate. If I read you're post properly Harry, only one fits my bike.?? Following are two pictures of the underside of my bike. Please disregard the bugs.
It appears as if either will work.

Bill - Don't use green, blue will do. Remember you have to remove the plate to change the oil.

Robert - I put mine on in 07 so the second kind of mount didn't exist. I do know that the early type does it's job.
In retrospect the early one might be better because the plate mounts to rubber biscuits and their isn't any direct connection to the engine. In the event of something ugly you might rip a rubber biscuit apart, with the later mounting you could strip out the hole in the engine or snap a bolt off in the engine. Take a close look to see what I mean.
I'm sure either would do the job.

I have the same setup Harry does (I believe he copied mine or I copied his..)

There are three rubber mounts and the one tubular (looks like a chess piece actually) one that screws into a rubber mount. I have had this on my bike since early in my ownership since I did hole an oil filter going into an S-turn, completely oiling the rear tire, which made that day MUCH more exciting then I like. Mine hasn't fallen off, and I never bother with loctite on the nuts and bolts that hold the plate to the mounts. Mine has been off/on at least 8 times since I installed it for oil changes.

The photo of the underside of the engine clearly shows the mounting points for the rubber mounts. I have no factual idea why BMW changed it on the later bikes, but if I had to guess, someone probably ripped one off a bike by hitting a big-ass (tech-term) rock on the front edge and sheering the rubber mounts. That's much more of an issue if you are playing GS with your R12R. The mount they later used would prevent the sheering movement toward the back, but it also could function like a pivot point if the front edge of the guard caught on something and came loose heading down while the bike moved forward. In that instance - I can see the bike catapulting the rider off, which would be rather interesting.

Nothing has ever fallen off mine. The R1200R doesn't tend to buzz parts loose (unlike some Brit bikes I owned where everything fell off.)

The bottom of mine also shows some significant hits by stuff - which I've never noticed when it happens. They are hard/deep enough to not wash off when I clean it before reinstalling it after an oil change.

It's a good thing IMHO.
