Highway pegs

Post by griffi »

You know, I'm loving this bike. I've done a few mods so far, and I've got some on the way. I'm getting new Yacugars lowered suspension (-.75") and that's got me thinking... I'm good with an hour or so in one position but I've been sticking my legs out over the cylinders on the highway for some knee relief. I'd really like to find some pegs that mount to the bottom of my SWM crashbars - anybody got something like that?

Before you go that route, try putting your legs/feet in that position. The ones I've seen mounted on crashbars are so far apart it would seem to take a talented ballet dancer to spread their legs that far. Didn't seem like a comfortable solution. When I start to cramp up a bit (with a low seat this may happen more frequently), I usually either shake out a leg at a time down toward the road (my legs are short enough that without sliding forward on the seat I don't have to worry about them hitting the road) or I rest them for a bit on top of the cylinders. With boots on and my Roadcrafter suit, I'm good for about 5 minutes of cylinder-rest before it becomes uncomfortably warm. That usually does it for me.

I had a pair of Ilium Works pegs on mine, and have since moved them to my GS. But they don't attach to the crash bars; rather they mount where the crashbars mount. I don't believe you can use the two together.

I like them, though they are a bit too close for me (34" inseam). They are adjustable, however.

It's enough so that when I'm on a long ride, I can relieve some of the fatigue. It does make everything louder, sticking my huge feat out into the wind.

I had great luck with spring-loaded retractable Mick O Pegs crashbar mounted on my Goldwings. Very durable and they're out of any deep turn drag zone when retracted. I'd probably put some on my R12R but I'm not sure I like the look - been thinking about it.

There was a company who made spring loaded footrests that were located under the cylinders. You pushed them down (and held them down) with your feet. I tried them at the RA rally in VT (or was it NY state?) near Bennington.. and wasn't that impressed with them. Seemed to put my feet awfully close to the ground.

YMMV, mebbe.

I've an '07 with the SW-Motech crash bars and I wind up just artfully draping my legs over the bars. ;) I've a 32" inseam and I think actually having pegs on the outside of the bars would be too close and not allow a full leg stretch.

The Ilium works are better than nothing; but, if I had crash bars I'd go that route. Put pegs on the bars. I'd also be able to better mount some more lighting. As it is, I'm getting ready to do about 8K miles and am out of time to change much else. I'm headed for Alaska from San Diego, and thence back to Denver.

I knocked the crap out of a car on my driveway with the Iliums. I'd gone down the drive with them not extended and then returned from a ride with them out......just one more way to mess up.

On the other hand, in a tip over from the stand with the pegs out them seemed to be a kind of crash bar deal and prevented some damage.

They are beefy and nicely built. It's just that I always feel as if my feet are going to slip off. I have to look at them again carefully; I don't think there's any adjusment left. The peg is forward of the cylinder and it's as if the inside of my ankle and boot are wrapping around the cylinder head. Higher and out in the clear would be the better solution as in a crash bar mount. Still better than nothing.
