I've not been around many boxer engines that dont make some valve noise. NEWER High end porsche excluded. but vw subaru, bmw yeah...ticky lil buggers.

I have a 2001 with only around 15,000 miles on it now! Love it!
Handling is sublime and the ability to brake well into a curve is welcome, although, thankfully, not often required!
It's a push-rod engine so it will be a little noisy, the left pot 'tick' is common. I have an excellent private engineer
who does everything necessary without having to be asked....he'll spot a fault if I don't! Being sightly deaf and
always wearing earplugs when I ride cancels out much of the noise!
No ABS on mine....but I like it that way! I've been riding too long now to require help when I brake!
It's a whole different ball park from any Honda.....better in some respects and less sophisticated in others and
certainly quirky. Not a bad thing.
There is a wealth of experience on this forum and you can learn a lot if you need to. Even if you're a capable
engineer some of the jobs that you may have to do may just need a bit of guidance so you can get them done in
the best fashion.

That ticking noise is the chain tensioner. They all do that to some extent and there is a chain tensioner upgrade that comes from the 1200 engine that quiets it down. When I bought mine used in 2004, it was so loud that I though I had a bad bearing. Fortunately, an updated tensioner took care of that noise.

havent heard that one yet. Mine ticks, but not terribly. seems to do it when cold, braking hard to a stoplight. maybe worth a look...

Looks like most of the noise I'm hearing is worn throttle shafts, mainly so on the right side. I would imagine this is also creating a vacuum leak and only exacerbating the
already common surging problem. I've ordered the build kits from Bing and will be tearing into both TB's soon. Looks like a very straighforward process. Any other high miler's here that
have rebuilt their TB's?

Vann (WNCBMW) had his TBs done last year i believe. If he reads this he will chime in and correct me if I'm wrong and maybe explain what it entailed. And yes, I did the upgrade on the cam chain tensioner but I seem to recall someone telling me about another part of that tensioning system that gets worn over time, and that may be what some of the noise is.

Ben, Boxer was very good about maintenance on his bike. But he may have slacked off a bit concerning keeping the antifreeze in the tankside radiators serviced on a regular basis. Might want to check on that. Very important.

Boxer is also a master chef when it comes to cooking up small game: grouse, squirrels and of course snipe.

FYI...sometime last year as a noob-before buying the bike...I was perusing this forum, and saw "check your coolant" in a thread...i had it typed into google search, but then thought "hey these are air cooled bikes... internet A-HOLES" before clicking LOLOLOL well done
