Max wattage from accessory port

Post by Pickled »

Want to get some heated clothing. Does anyone know the safe max wattage one can draw from the accessory port on a 2002 r1150r?

"The alternator on the R1150R will power a small town. Plenty of juice for a heated suit, gloves, and socks. Find out the total amps of the suit, gloves, and socks and multiply by 12 Volts to get the watts. The alternator puts out about 700 watts at cruising (less in town) and the bike probably only uses 200 - 250 counting the fuel pump, ABS, lights, heated grips, etc. That leaves ? 450 Watts for your gear."

If you plan on using the factory accessory outlet, it's got a fuse rated at 7 amps, so about 100 watts or so is about when the fuse would melt and the wiring to the outlet is not a very large size .
I think you would be risking damaging the wiring if you just put a higher capacity fuse in .

Thanks great info. Much appreciated. Sounds like I ought to wire a separate circuit. Will probably do that.

I've never had any problems and I use a heated coat, gloves, motolights, GPS and my high beams on.

For those that want (or need) to maximize power efficiency, running LED driving lights instead of the conventional incandescent lamps will save a bunch of power. A pair of 55 watt lamps (110 watts total) will pull over 9 amps of current. A pair of 9 watt LED's (18 watts total) will pull 1.5 amps. That pair of LED's on my R are 2-3 times brighter and makes my stock headlamp look like a candle in comparison. Plus they will most likely outlive me!

The energy savings pays for a fresh gallon of antifreeze when it comes time to change the coolant in the tankside radiators.
