6000 Mile service- Can I do it myself?

Post by Blitz »

Just want to know what is included in the 6,000 mile service and if I can get away with doing it myself. I've rebuilt a Honda before and have decent mechanical skills, always looking for new tools (drool) though. :)
Thanks all....safe riding to everyone!

Yes

Yes, easy.

What you give up is two things: the BMW computer diagnostics and the ability of someone who looks at many bikes each week seeing something or knowing to check something that you will miss.

Otherwise:

Fluids. Inspect, change, fill, etc. For EVO/servo-assisted ABS the control circuit is 2 years while the front and rear circuits are annual flush and fill - it is a dicey, cumbersome process and not what you think.

Filters. Change oil, check air (fuel at 24K I think). Nuts and bolts checked for looseness/re-torqued (especially header nuts and side stand/center stand bolts. Check alt belt tension. Check for paralever, rear wheel play.

Brake pad and rotor inspection. Replace as needed.

Avoid the temptation to fiddle with non-service items.

Document and keep receipts (future buyers expect BMW owners to do their own work, but also want docs.)

Has anyone tried to do a partial service and take it to the dealer to do the rest? I can take care of the low-hanging fruit, and leave the more complex stuff for the pros.

Matt -
That's what I always do, except for the first service then I let them do it all. I want that history for possible warranty support later and so they could spot something I might miss on a new model.
I never had any objection from my dealer...he just made a note on the ticket that "owner performed fluid changes...", etc.

Routine maintenance

I pretty much am learning how to do it all myself witht he exception of the ABS brake service and computer diag scan since I don't have the computer with which to scan the bike and computers do catch stuff us ordinary mortals might miss.

I think you have to let the dealer plug his box of tricks into you bike. I have no idea what they are doing but mine was improved after the service. I got better consumption after the 6000mile service. I put that down to some CPU tweeks. So I think you could do all the dirty bits but a visit might pay off.
