Hand Grip Glue?

Post by swamper »

I replaced the hand grips and used hair spray to hold them onto the throttle Heated grip plastic inner part. It doesn't seem to be bonding as the grip seems to keep working down towards the end weight causing friction and keeping the throttle open, ie: not returning to idle. So I've pulled the grip back off to redo, it fits very tight. What would be a good bonding agent to use that would actually work?

I replaced mine I guess very early 2019. I used the same procedure and even went out shopping for some hair spray (something that has not been a part of my life for 30+ years...as well as a comb). I've had no difficulties with the grip slipping. That's a puzzle. There are very light adhesives that would help but would most certainly prevent them from ever being removed in the future. The lightest and easiest to work with would be Elmer's Glue. But I guess if they ever needed replacing again it might be possible using a heat gun and a very light hand with a utility knife. As it was with mine I had to make two repairs with a soldering iron when I cut one heating element in removing the old grips. One grip had already failed (burnt element--easily repaired).

I think I used hair spray also when replaced my grips last year without any issues. I've used WD 40 (takes a long time to dry) and electrical contact cleaner in the past as well.

Back in my trials bike days I'd use Renthal grip glue in addition to safety wire to make sure that they wouldn't shift of move. If I remember right you need to work pretty quickly with the grip glue- while it does provide some lube qualities it also start to set up quickly.

What brand of Hair-spray did you guys use, maybe the stuff I used had the wrong type of stuff in it.

^ I don't recall the particular brand. Only that it was aerosol and nothing special. I think the idea is that the alcohol in the spray softens and provides some lubrication to the grip to slip it on and when it evaporates you should be good to go.

You might also try the safety wire thing...stainless steel wire that you put around the grip ends and twist it with pliers so that it compresses tightly. Snip it off and bury the cut end into the rubber. Might be worth a quick try, it's a lot easier than removing and reinstalling a grip...and it does hold well.

How much did you put on? Only needs a light-ish coating to give some lube and then a little bit of stick. The grip should be tight enough to grip hard without the hairspray.

I'm not sure it's a good idea with the wired grips - but I always had great success removing grips with a narrow diameter cross-head screwdriver:
push it gently between the grip and the bar and you can 'roll' the screwdriver around the inside of the grip to help it un-bond with the bar and also to get it moving (either on or off). Use gentle movements and don't try to force anything too quickly.

One thing I have witnessed was my father (unbelieveably) using about half a bottle of dishwasher liquid as lubricant while trying to get a grip onto the throttle of one of his classics. That was at least 10 years ago now, and, even with VERY tight safety wire wrapping at both ends, the damn grip is STILL sliding if it's a hot day. One day I'm going to strip the grip off, clean everything and put it on properly. (the bike is hardly used so it's not a worry).

The other thing to look at, if you're still having is slide around, is: how hard are you gripping the bars? If you have a tight grip, loosen off. It's a bit like holding a fencing foil: tight enough to control it's movement, but loosely, so that it can flow and move freely within your grasp. The other analogy is 'hold it like you would a live bird". You only need enough grip for control, you shouldn't be supporting any weight on the bars, or using any 'force' through them. Steering should be a guiding motion, not an aggressive shove. I often ride just using my fingers.

Bought some hair-spray an retried. Didn't work again. So tried a very thin layer of silicone caulk and a wire tie. Seems to be working on my test ride of 100 miles yesterday. Probably will try to remove the wire tie next time I go riding this bike.

Just like everyone else, I used hairspray.
But, have you thought to check if the grip is perhaps stretched from putting it on? I remember it was an easy job two years ago - but I did stretch the replacement( same style as original ) pushing and pulling it in to place.
Mine rubbed a bit up near the handlebar control ; yours could be contacting the bar end -and it only tales a small spot in rotation.
I sprayed the gap at the end with WD- 40 over a few weeks, each time pulling the grip away from the ends.
That worked thanks to patience.
