Got a letter from BMW Motorrad USA today

Post by TonyT607 »

Letter says it all. Good thing I don't do the things they say cause the ABS problems............

They also included a couple of pages that are supposed to be added to the manual.

Free inspections

Post by hotzuk »

Thanks for the post. Free inspection! What is up with that? Where is the fix for the solution. How are they going to test to see if the problem is for your bike. Give you a low battery and go out and do emergency stops. I do not even see the need for this service call unless BMW is willing to put up a solutiion to the problem

I ought to be getting my letter soon then. Since that I am taking my Rockster in for the 12,000-miles service in the end of September 05, I'll have the mechanics do that free inspection as well.

Got mine today as well. NO ABS for me though! I guess the free inspection might be worth it anyhow!

I got one AND I have ABS! Awesome!

So it tells me what I already know. Am I liable to make sure this gets in the manual if I sell my bike to some poor unsuspecting soul?

What a cheap way out, but what else can they do? Give everyone a refund and remove the ABS? I'm sure some of you here would think that's the better option! Oh no, here we go again!

I got my letter today too. Mine's a non-ABS model even though the letter says their records show that it's ABS.

Interesting what it says about ABS under racing conditions. I guess you can't put an ABS model on the track without getting "surprises".

Hmmm. I notice that all the flags of the folks who posted are the Stars & Stripes.

I haven't received my letter and I DO have an ABS equipped bike. Mind you, my flag has a red Maple Leaf in its centre.

I guess BMW started with the most litigious country on the planet? :smt058

Got my letter & I have ABS & I did have a fault a couple of months ago that left me with only residule brakes at a stop light. I stopped ok, no biggie, hasn't happened since, but it did happen.

BMW's solution is to send me some pages of the owner's manual, which says amoung other things to adjust the brake lever for maiximum travel when using residule brakes. I guess I will do that as I'm trying to stop. Oh, & they say to use both the front & rear pedal (which is good advice, as I practice with the residule brakes every morning coasting down my parking structure it does work better when using front & rear brakes).

No letter for me yet. Maybe they think I don't have ABS.

I also received one. I dropped in to see the service manager and he allowed me to review the 1 1/2-page checklist from BMW. I'd be foolish to ignore the courtesy tests listed.

Funny the criticism that comes when a manufacturer does nothing, but when they do something, the criticism comes nonetheless.

I received the same letter yesterday and, like some of you, I don't have ABS or servo-assist on my bike. But... there is a sticker on my 2004 R1150R's fuel tank that informs the rider the bike is equipped with servo-assisted brakes. How about you guys? In my case, the sticker is wrong. I can find no ABS or servo-assist hardware on my bike, there's no servo whine when I use the brakes and I have full braking power even with the ignition off. Most importantly, I didn't pay for the ABS option. I wonder where the error in record-keeping occured at BMW or BMW Motorrad USA that has them thinking some of these bikes have servo-assisted ABS?
