Self wrenching/BMW Warranty

I'm reaching my 18K service and would like to start wrenching on my own bike. Will doing so void my warranty? If not, do I just keep receipts and records?

The Magnusson-Moss warranty act affectively states that you or a third party can do maintenance without voiding your warranty. The only catch is that if you poorly adjust or neglect to perform an action or use a part that causes damage, BMW would not be responsible for the damages under the warranty, eg., if you adjust your valves too tight, you have little recourse with the warranty. This act covers numerous areas such as the brand of oil, muffler etc.

Do research and possible talk with your dealer. Many are very accommodating to you performing your own work. Mine logged information in to his system that indicated the 6000 svc check was performed when I bought the supplies to do it.

I'll check with my dealer to see how receptive they are. If they have a problem with it, I'm fortunate to live within an hours drive to 4 other dealers.

I always annotate the blank pages in my owners manual very much like a diary. Oil and filterchange millage,date and type, tire changes, date, milage and type, valve adjustments, air filter etc. I also initial each entry. No questions for any potential warrenty work. Also impressive to a new potential owner if you ever decide to sell.

I've done all my own maintenance after 600 miles. My dealer replaced the fuel pump and replaced the rear pinion gear seal with less than 3 weeks left on the warranty and 17,000 miles on the bike.
