I just got back from Finland last night. They're actually riding motorcycles in twenty to thirty degrees below zero over there!!
By law all cars and bikes must use metal studded tires throughout the winter.
But I didn't see any BMW's....and you know what that means:
*NO HEATED GRIPS*!
To hell with that!

Strange to see bikes speeding into turns on roads packed with ice and snow and not crashing...

That's the funny thing. I didn't see anyone wearing expensive, high-tech gear. It was all makeshift/mismatched stuff; A lot of knitted scarfs and ski pants etc. Even the helmets were looking like WWII surplus. Oh, and the older guys had some bushy beards which I guess helped some too.
It must have all been in the *layering* of their clothes.
I think that "Rukka" gear would have cost more than most of the bikes I saw over there;)

Hi guys,
Being a Finn myself, I had to comment this post (my first posting to the board, by the way...)
I think you have seen some group on their way to "Talviralli" or "Winter Rally" that was held in the western part of Finland on 10th-12th Febryary. Generally it is extremely uncommon to ride a streetbike during the winter, but some hardcore bikers do it. And then there are people who ride enduro bikes in the forests, but you don't usually see them on the main roads or in towns.
Here you can see some pictures from Talviralli 2004: http://www.mp69.fi/kuvat/talviralli04/
I think the Russian Ural and similar bikes are popular in this event, but as you can see there is some modern equipment present, too (even some Beemers
).

Ketos for the info, JAY TEE.
As I said, it *was* surprising to see bikes on the frozen roads of Soumi in Feburary! It makes sense now.
Great photos of the rally! A true example of "SISU!" (guts)
Cheers,
A Karelian
