Removing grips
G'day All,
It's been a very long time since I posted, mainly due to being rather disgruntled that my BMW Dealer can't or won't fix the constant vibrations on my '04 model.
However, I've decided to try and minimise the effects rather than run it over a cliff. So, can anyone give me some tips on removing the grips? I'm a bit concerned about wrecking the heated grip elements.
I'm intending to fill the bars with shot and fit gel-grips. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Cheers

BP explained once how he did his...he used a sharp Stanley type knife..you know the ones you can snap off the blade when the edge gets blunt...box cutter..is that what they're called.
Anyway..he said he just started at one end and started to cut while pulling the two bits apart so he could cut the rubber without cutting the wires of the heated grip..slow and careful.
Good luck...let us know how it goes.

There's a way to do this without cutting the grips. I'm not sure how though. Last year I had a local shop swap out the stock handlebar and put on a rockster bar. They re-installed the same grips and grip heaters. Maybe some compressed air and a little lube sprayed in between the grip and heater element?

Hey BP,big papa wrote:Yeah, I have heard of using air. I was looking to specifically change out the grips. I have gel grips now. I hated the stock ones.
Can you give details about the gel grips you put on? How do you like them?
Doing everything I can to prevent/reduce carpal tunnel and tennis elbow and I have to replace my grips anyway to fix my heater connections. Thanks.

I just went to the local yamahahondazuki dealership and looked at all the aftermarket sportbike grips. You have to buy 2 packages and use the large diameter grip from each package. For me, I just hated the shape of the stock grips. I did notice the heat comes thru even more with these grips. There were alot of grips to choose from. Just find the shape and feel you like.

I have been using foam grip covers like these for two years...

No need to remove original grips, and the heat still comes through.
I originally purchased the grip wraps from a dirt bke shop, but recently bought the ones from the "Boneyard" as a replacement.

I just took a set off of a Concours and it was surprisingly easy.
I pumped my compressor to about 90 psi, put on the air gun and extension. I took off the end weights, peeled the outside up and inserted the air gun extension as far as I could.
I let loose with the air while simultaneously pulling from the inside collar area of the grip. They both popped right off.

Removing grips
I removed the grips on my R without damaging them. I found that the rubber is glued to the heated grip sleaves only at the ends. I removed the bar-end weights and rolled the rubber of the grip back while carefully cutting the rubber where it was glued to the sleave with a #11 exacto knife. After both ends where cut free I stuck the nozzle from my air compress under the edge of the rubber. A blast of air from the compressor expands the grip and it slips right off. Compressed air also works well for installing the new grips.
The old grips where still completely intact. I gave them to a friend to reinstall on her 1150R.

If you love your motorcycle, set it free.
If it comes back to you, you've probably highsided!

Here's a Youtube video on how to use an air gun to pop off your grips. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buwXnnHW ... ig&index=1
