Jumpstart terminal retrofit

Post by Lean Angle »

Just put it in yesterday on my '02 beak. Only 4 oem parts were needed:
1. 61137671355 Bracket
2. 61137671354 Terminal Screw
3. 61137672395 Protection Cap
4. 07119931050 Flat Washer
Less than $20 for all.

First remove the plastic starter cover, replace the brass stopper on the starter upper terminal with the Bracket, align and bore a hole on the plastic starter cover to accomodate the terminal plug and re-install it, then install the Terminal plug, Washer, and Protection cap on the bracket. That's all!

Hope this info is useful.

What about the fat shiney negative terminal that screws into the cylinderhead?

Weee donnneeeeed noooo steeengkeeeng negative terminal

My 02 didn't have the provision for it on the cylinder head, so I just use that big bolthead sticking out near the bottom of the engine. Works just fine

Of course, YMMV, blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda... :)

I added the same 'mod' to mine. Of course I haven't had a battery problem since (if that's what it takes, then it's worth it).

As for the ground (negative) - I can find many places to ground it to!

A good zero resistance jumper cable ground is important. You can't have the jumper cable's clamp sputtering thru a painted or fuzzy cad plated surface. The electronics don't like it (the sputtering/arcing). The BMW negative lug also has a clamp retention groove so it won't slip off and arc like crazy. I was under the impression that the same threaded hole (for the Negative Lug) or one like it nearby, also exists on our 2002 models. Anyone that's done this add-on know for sure?

Sputtering/arcing, hmmm...is this what caused the ABS on the GS Adv to go south in Long Way Round when they welded the busted frame?
