Got Geico Experience?

Post by bgardner74 »

Progressive, a company I've been paying for close to 20 years, will no longer write cycle policies in Connecticut. I've got less than 2 months left. So, I started shopping and found Geico thinks Connecticut is still okay to do business in. Any opinions of or experiences with Geico will be be gratefully accepted. :?:

I had an ok experience with them. When I bought my R I called ride west insurance agent in Seattle. They quoted me standard rates in the $300-$400 range, and then quoted me $95 for GMAC. I had them triple check to make sure it was right.

Then they called backed in a couple weeks, said they made a mistake, and it was only supposed to be $57!!!! (they refunded the difference). This is for full coverage and $250 deductables! I even argued and said there is no way that can be right, but they insisted. I have the full paperwork from GMAC and it looks good!

Boy did I have an experience with GEICO!! Enought said about that claim against them, except my attorney made money and I made money.

I'm with Dairyland Insurance in Arizona. So far, good people to deal with.

One thing to remember when shopping for car/motorcycle insurance, the policy writer will first run a credit check on you. For an unknown reason good credit seems to result in lower rates. No one has been able to fully explain to me how a person with questionable credit history and an excellent driving record would be considered to be an insurance risk. Not to say I fall into that category!

Yup. I've got to agree with that. I've found Geico to be unusually professional and helpful.

I *do* get the fact that they base premiums partially on one's credit record. A good credit record is pretty good proof of responsible conduct; ie: a client that won't be reckless on a bike.

GEICO has come up before. As I wrote in another thread, GEICO provides LIDAR radar units to police forces, according to stuff I have read on the internet.

They also will not insure you if you have a radar detector

That means you either have to lie to your insurance company, which is immoral and illegal, or not have a radar detector, which is my choice and perfectly legal in 48 states.

IMO I would not want to support a company that treats customers that way.

I have some trouble with that rate. I also bought my `03 from Ride West and the usual rate for me is just under $300 a year. Probably from the same agent. Hard for me to believe there's that much difference. And actually, $300 is not a bad rate if you compare with other companies and states.

From what I understand, a company that decides not to write policies anymore still will carry yours as long as you don't do anything that would cause them to drop you.

I had GEICO for the first year. Competitive rate, but for the second year they tried to hike my premium by over 50%. Guess they figured I might not notice, the scheming bastards. Dropped them like a bad habit.

I agree! I can't explain it. I told her that it has to be wrong, but she insisted. I read the policy carefully when it arrived and it looks fine. I really don't know what the deal is... but I should probably stop complaining about it!

Got Geico Experience?

Post by bgardner74 »

Thank you for the responses. On this board, all you have to do is ask and you do receive. After reading the last one from Greybeard, I went back to read all 9 pages of the notice I had gotten from Progressive. In addition to the cancellation, which looked official enough, there was, on another page, a statement to the effect that my existing policy with Progressive Northwester Insurance Co. would not be continued. I should pay the accompanying invoice and the new coverage would be with Progressive Casualty Company (what happened to the "Drive insurance from Progressive" logo?). I phoned the Progressive agent but missed her callback a day later.

Living in CT, I have suspended the collision damage each year from Nov. 1 through March 31, which saved money and kept me from risking a ride on snow, ice or salted and sanded roads. The Progressive notice stated that such temporary lapses in coverage will no longer be allowed. So, all things considered, I will be making a change. Will report back later.

And Thanks again to everyone who took the time to help out.

I have been with GEICO for about 15 years, for cars and bikes. Best rates I have ever had, and also great service. But. I have so far not had to make a claim with them, and in the end, that is what matters. Paying your money month after month, well anyone can arrange for you to do that, that's the easy part. Handling a claim..I hope I never have to find out.

As for the rates, some years ago my bike rate went way up. When I called them they said that they had just spent the year re-evaluating how they did their bike rates, and were making adjustments. I think it went from
about $180 to $300. It now is back down to $239 for the most recent 12 month policy.

I dont know if Nationwide insures cycles, but my opinion is to avoid them. I am in a case with them now (with my car) and its dragged on for months. Very unprofessional IMO. I'll be changing soon.
