WooHoo! R1200S is here

Post by LonestaRR »

The dealership just called me to let me know they have a new R1200S (yellow) on the floor and I think I get to ride it if it doesn't already have a buyer....Wait, what was it that wncbmw said about stockpiling things if they fit? It's over in the Off Topic "Dang....it happened again!"

I've got to go stockpile.

Kristi --

I know the feeling. My '04 R has 40k miles and my dealer keeps sending me "great deal" emails. I'm glad that he's in Tucson; otherwise, I would be riding a ST right about now. Alas -- I love my R too much to her go even if a ST is calling my name.

Dang Kristi! It's one thing to stockpile helmets or boots but bikes!

I'm jealous.

I have the VStar on consignment at a local bike shop. Sometimes ya gotta sit back and reflect on what you want to accomplish. The VStar was my "Barbie doll" bike, playing dressup and accessorizing with all the aftermarket goodies. But, I want to RIDE! And for all around, long distance riding, my fave is still the R12C, followed by the Rock (esp for spirited riding).

A lot of other bikes on the market, and to me, they're all temptresses. Or should I say mistresses?

Yellow Bikes

Post by MikeCam »

I have always been a sucker for yellow bikes. And the pics of the new R1200S look very sweet. Cannot afford to let the dealer know these things! That's how Steve tricked me with the K1200R last summer.

Kristi,

Didn't you just recently drop your pony? Don't leave me to think you'll be dumping your darling because she now has blemishes...which you caused?!?!

Dropped pony

Post by LonestaRR »

Oh no, I wouldn't get rid of my RR because of my drop. I've already gotten past the scuff and left them there as a reminder. I just want to take the R1200S out and see if I can be tempted by it's power. Actually, I think it will be too tall for me anyway, but the dealer wants me to come check it out and if we can ever get 24 hours without rain down here, I might head that way. There's a chance I could test ride it if I'm tall enough and if it isn't already spoken for and that is why I'm waiting for the rain to stop.

I am at San Jose BMW this week. Tuesday last, road the new R1200S all thru the Santa Cruz mountains.....oh darn. Will have it Alices on Sunday.

Fantastic bike, smooth, powerful, the Ohlins on the bike as it turns out are Ohlins top of the line shocks, front and rear, adjustable everything. Unbeliveable handling, hits 130 in an eye blink, the seating position only ever so slightly more extreme than my ST. I could easily ride it cross country and have the time of my life. Any one in Nor Cal come on by.

Holt's in Athens, Ohio had one fresh off the truck last weekend and I looked it over, but no rides. It really looks fast and fancy but looks like a really commited riding position. I don't think my hip would let me ride it for very long before looking for a scenic place to stretch.

Dare I say it, but I could be summoned to the Dark Side of 1200S power!

I'm a tame sort, the kinda guy who wouldn't besmirch say...... a KLR rider on a "BMW's only" ride, the kinda guy who wouldn't feel slighted if an older/slower Roadster were to spank me, or if a toy of a Bonneville were to garner more attention than machines costing three times as much.

But put me in the saddle of a mega horsepower feather-weight Beemer, the likes of which would make a bad rider look good, that is so forgiving as to allow a rider to fly waaaay over his skill level, and at the same time do it with the air of rich folk who can afford marque elitism......

Oh hell yeah! I could..... I WOULD look good putting to shame those riders who are better than I; but that for my Beemer R1200'S' making me appear to be THE man, THE racer, THE LEGEND (with money)! Oh but I wish I could afford the ULTIMATE elitist toy that would make ANY bad rider look good.........

The R1200S, a machine perfect for a guy suffering from a short man complex. And at 5' 2"...... I would LOVE to "suffer" these foothills, river roads, high altitude jaunts, and distant flat-out runners of Central California and Nevada. In my dreams, I could easily suffer from the saddle of the new Bavarian butt plug..... What colors do they come in?

In your dreams!

Aw c'mon Pat, I think you're a good enough rider to know that the machine alone won't necessarily make a bad rider good. A decent rider better, perhaps. Or, the R1200S could likely make a bad rider ride faster badly!

I'm inseamed challenged also... tried straddling the R1200S yesterday at Ozzie's and true to the bike's specs, it's at least a 32" seat height. But guess what? The K1200R with the low-seat is quite manageable.

Irregardless of a good rider better or a better rider great, I'll bet it's all set to make a poor rider poorer. Maybe I missed it somewhere but has a price been set on the S? I didn't ask when I was at the dealer, because I knew I wasn't buying but now I'm curious.

WOOH!! I'll bet you'd need a twin loaf as big as Jennifer Lopez's for that seat to be comfortable on a long ride!

A quick ride report that I posted on the Pelican site today.
Well guys, just returned to the Arizona mountains on my R1200ST, now with 24,000 miles, after spending two weeks blitzing California roads and do ing the 49er. Of the many highlights was spending 3 days on the San Jose BMW R1200S demo. By the way, Chris dynoed this bike on his very stingy dyno and just over 110 RWHP on an engine with 300 miles. This S has the 190 rear wheels, ABS, Ohlins and the same taller final ratio.

Comparison to my R1200ST. The riding position is only slightly more extreme so very comfortable, not a bad all day ride at all. The non servo brakes are easily as powerful as the servo assist on my ST and just as easy to pull, along the lines of eyeball popping. I love the way the front wheel just rises off the ground in 2nd gear as the R's pass thru 6K rpm. My impression is that the engine is very torquey 4K R's in 6th the bike just launches. Amazing handling and is absolutly on rails. I spent 3 days riding Hwy 1, 9, Skyline, Hwy 17 and all the roads in the Santa Cruz Mountains, no chicken strips on the tires. Simply amazing how well it is planted on those roads up there, a sophisticated sport bike for real roads and for those experienced riders that know the difference.

There is slightly more vibration, but not all the time, than the ST, due to the higher compression ratio. As near as I could tell, my gas milage was some thing like 41 to 43 US MPG. None of the US bikes have theie fuel gage working yet, they will as soon as the approiate soft ware is down loaded from BMW to the dealers and subsequently to the bikes. The power is just like the R1200ST just noticeably more thruout the entire rev range, you feel the hit at about 6100R's and the pull stays the same until the revlimiter is hit at what appears to be about 8800 RPM. 4th gear hits the rev limiter at something over 130 while on my R1200ST 4th hits the rev limiter at the same something over 110, BTW a big suprise there. After my 3 days and 2 or 300 miles on the S, back to my ST, at first I thought something was wrong with my ST as it was a dog big time, by comparison. Going from the ST to the S did not seem to be a big change, on the other hand after 3 days of riding the S going back to my ST seemed like a massive change.

About the Ohlins, the deal of the century at a $600.00 option, turns out that they are Ohlins top of the line package, adjustable everything even ride height.

I have never ridden a R1 or a GSXR, but the new R1200S is exactly what I thought and hoped it would be

I will definitely have a new S.

It is a fact, contrary to what some say, there will definitely be a HP2 version of the S appx 20 Lbs lighter again and with a no BS 135 to 140 HP.

Did I say trhat I enjoyed myself...............................
