Best "Bang for the Buck" Upgrade to Improve Ride o

Post by gagator79 »

Listed below are the upgrades I have installed. I love the bike as is, but I am looking to "invest" more money in improving the ride-ability or safety of the bike. Many folks on the board here rave about ohlin shocks, but they are a significant investment...just wondering if they are worth it or what else might be a better bang for the buck. I am not a high mileage rider (yet). All suggestions appreciates!

Upgrades installed:
- Bar backs
- Peg lowering kit
- Sargent seat (incredible difference!)
- Throttlemeister
- Fallert faring
- Signalminder
- LED Brake Lights
- Pirate's backrest (for my son)

I rate the system cases as a "must do". I find the convienence of that on-board storage hard to do without now.

If you carry a passenger the Pirate's backrest is the best thing you can do. I tried the harness, (and nothing) when riding with my boys and the degree of confidence it gives them is incredable. They practically lounge back there !

I installed the GS hand guards because I commute year round. I really don't like the looks of them, however they keep the rain, cold and bugs off my hands to a surprising degree. I leave them on all the time now.

I have the BMW touring screen on the bike now. It is noisy and there's some buffeting issues in Interstate traffic. But it works fairly well. I will no doubt try other protection remedies when money allows, but for now I get fair rain / airflow protection from the touring screen.

Speaking of carrying passengers; I have a cheap little NADY intercom that I use when I take the boys out. They like the interaction on a ride, and I'm sure most others would too. I'll upgrade to somrthing better later on as it has limitations, but it's a nice gaget to have.

I have a Kreiga R35 backpack. This pack was designed for motorcycling and works really well if you want to take your stuff with you and aren't using a tank bag. Easy to put on over an armored jacket, it fits well and you don't know it's there when you're riding. In the Seattle area, almost ALL motorcycle commuters use a backpack rather then luggage. I have to park in a public lot, and the concept of taking everything with you is appealing.

can you use a throttlemeister with GS hand guards?

Also did you install the signal minder yourself? if so, how hard is it to do? I really would like to get these. I am constantly forgetting to cancel my turn signals.

There is a specific throttlemeister for the GS, because of the handguards.

Russell seat--it can't be overstated how good this seat is. :smt041
Bar backs.
Ohlin shocks. It did not make me Ricky Racer but it smoothed out ALL the little bumps on the road.

The throttlemeister is a 'piece of cake' install except for finding the wire to tap into to delay signal cancellation. The provided instructions are very straightforward...the wire is tough to find and fish out. Definately one of the best mods around.

Good for you! Im married to a lovely lady that sometimes rides on the back. I forgot to mention a Ritches seat. There is nothing like a custome fit for those long trips. Mike.
