how do you lower the exhaust

What parts are required to lower the exhaust on a 2002 r1150r ? Can they be purchased from as a non BMW part? This is a great bike! I haven't even started any of my others, is this just new bike thing or am I going to sell the others?

There is a genuine BMW lowering kit...I don't know the part numbers...but you should just go to a local exhaust shop and get them to bend a short piece of pipe the right size and angle and make a bracket for the can...it shouldn't be too hard.

If lowering it is so you can use a full size left case there is an easier way.

The parts for lowering the exhaust are from the GS. You need:
Mount brackets (99 99 0 000 489) ~ $100 and
Adaptor pipe (99 99 0 000 491) ~ $42.
There is also a heat shield that is more for looks than for shielding; it is p/n 99 99 0 000 490 and is $290! I think most people don't bother with this.
Cascade BMW used to list a kit from Wudo but don't know if this is still the case.

FWIW, I considered lowering my exhaust to allow for a full-size system case but in the end decided not to do it for a couple of reasons. If you lower the can, you have to take it off to remove the wheel. Also, the angle of the exhaust matches the angle of the rear trim, so you lose a little in looks. If have not found the smaller case to be much of an issue but I only do the occasional solo weekend trip. For real touring, you will need the extra space that comes with a full-size laft bag.

Thanks for the ideas. The pictures are of the can removed and a chrome pipe added, as on the rockster site? How much more loudness to you get that way. Because,I have always believed that the quieter the bike the less the police notice you.

It's not really any louder at all..just a nicer deeper sound...try it yourself..it only takes 5-10 minutes to do.
