Auf Wiedersehen BMW

Post by Marcus »

Hey everyone,

I sold my Roadster today and will be picking up a...........brace yourselves..... Multistrada 1000s DS.

You've all been extremely helpful when I've had problems with my bike and I have to say that'll I'll miss the camaraderie (but maybe not the bickering over the ABS/Servo brakes  ).

Unfortunately, the Roadster was not the perfect fit for me. When I tried a friend's Multistrada, I got the grin back on my face. Yes, it's ugly as hell and valve checks will be my ruin, but the BMW's reliability has not impressed me in the year that I've had it: driveshaft + clutch replaced at 4000 miles, transmission + clutch replaced at 7000 miles. Both were covered by warranty but if this had happened outside of coverage, I'd be $5000 poorer! That being said, BMW and my dealer (Morton's BMW) provided EXCELLENT customer service.

I have a few accessories for sale and I've posted in the "Buy, Sell, Trade" section.

I wish all of you the best.

Good luck with the new Ducati...when they first came out the seat was like a rock..but now they have gel inserts..right?

I met a guy with one not long ago and the right side was scraped so bad..he said cornering clearance was a real problem..who'd have thought.

Let us know how it's going and post pics...please...btw..do they make paper bags big enough for it..they sure are ugly......kidding..(sort of). :D

I don't think that they're ugly at all. They look quite brutal. Make sure you post some pictures.

Well, I can't really stand Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie and Britney Spears. Maybe they're not ugly, but I still go "ugh" (ugh-ly?). Or perhaps they're just brutal. To each his own.

Congratulations on the new purchase, allthough its a little disconcerting that more and more messages like these are appearing :-( perhaps since they don't make the R any longer the ones on the road will slowly be retired. I guess the R1200R will be the new standard.

Ha ha very funny guys......

I picked up the Multi on Friday and rode home as gingerly as I could. It took a bit of getting used since I've grown familiar with servo brakes, little fork dive and somewhat sluggish take off. The handlebars are very different too - less angle and a lot like a dirt bike. Ouf, the clutch lever gave my hand a workout!

The seat is admittedly hard but I found out today that I could in fact go a lot further on this seat than on the Roadster's. BTW, the '05 and '06 seats were improved from the first release in '03. I remember going for a test ride on an '03 and wondering who the heck was the sadist who designed the original seat.

Went for a 4 hour ride today and it was a blast!!!! :D \:D/
The Multi feels so light and manoeuverable. You're sitting so upright and high up that it feels a little weird. I was wondering about windblast but the small fairing seems to do wonderful job. The bling value of the Ohlins suspension cannot be denied.

But.......

The mirrors are awful despite being improved for '05 and '06. The fairing vibrates at certain engine speeds, the fuel gauge is wacky and thinks the tank is empty even when there still a couple of gallons left and the brakes judder slightly when you're hard on the brakes and just about to stop. The Italians seem great at design but execution is pretty flawed and this shows up in the fit of the body panels. It was one of the things that kept me away from Ducatis (and Fiats, Alfa Romeos and Lancias) but I've decided to chance it with the Multi.

Oh man, I am sooooo looking forward to riding tomorrow! I'll post pics as soon as I can.

I wanna hear the news come service time. Lots of folks report that Beemers are expensive (altho' I don't worry about it; if it needs it, it needs it, and I am mechanically challenged to do it myself). Now, are Ducatis as expensive to maintain??

gel9001,

I think you're right - I've noticed quite a few members moving to other bikes. One thing that did surprise and dissapoint is the prices for used R1150Rs, even the ones with ABS. I tried selling mine but didn't have any takers for a while. I ended up trading it in and got what some people in the forum sold their bikes for. I guess maybe potential buyers are waiting for the '07 model to come out?

One thing I do miss already is my BMW dealer (Morton's BMW). What a nice place to visit. It's a BMW boutique but there's more to it than just BMW posters. There is a certain class to it and I don't mean a snooty attitude. The sales people are older, knowledgeable and aren't smarmy. I got my Multi from a multi-brand dealer and my saleperson left a lot to be desired. I only stuck to the deal because it's hard to beat $2k off MSRP on an '06. I also got a nice bonus when I found out that my insurance premium would go down by 50%!

dragonmojo,

Important question and one that I researched before the purchase.

600 miles - $250
6k miles - $450
12k miles - $700
18k miles - $450
and repeat

I ended up getting a maintenance package for $1995 that will take care of all scheduled factory maintenance for 3 years or 36k miles.
