fuel filter change @ 19K

Post by gel9001 »

I'm at my wits end why my bike hesitates, runns poorly and backfires. I've got 19K on my 2004 R. Before I hand it over to the dealer I'm thinking of changing the filter even though its supposed to be done @ 25K. Anyone ever do that? also, what does a fuel filter cost these days?

thanks,

gel9001,

Backfiring does not point to a clogged fuel filter. It's more likely a fuel injector. Next I'd look for a TPS, sparkplug, plug wire or hall sensor malfunction. Finding it may be easy for a sharp tech at the BMW dealer.

Backfiring only on decel should not occur if the injectors are shutting off all fuel like the Motronic is telling it to. That lack of control will spill excess fuel when on the throttle too.

Backfiring while on the throttle is usually an ignition problem, but can also be a burnt exhaust valve or zero valve clearance. You should do a clockwise wrench-turn of the hot engine as a quickie compression test to rule out the valves.

Whatever it is . . . it's a rare problem.

Rob - even though I am not the one with the problem (bike-related anyways) I just want to thank you for the wealth of knowledge that you provide all the time and free of charge. You're a valuable resource!

I'd like to have much more information as to when do these events take place. Can you indulge my curiosty?

Also please indicate how do you typically ride your bike, short runs, long runs, sustaned speeds and rpms, do you tach the bike often, do you run the bike hard, where do you keep your rpm's. Do you use the same gas station or mix brands....

What has been done to the bike, maintenanve wise, in the 19 K miles. Is this the bike you had a bit of a spill a little while bacK......has the problem been present since you had it repaired?

Not an insurmountable problem, but hard to diagnose without the patient...... 8)

I had similar symptoms, and it turned out to be a bad ignition coil. There are probably some fairly easy ways to figure out if this is the problem, but you'll need to get some sage advice from someone smarter than me. Maybe you could try pulling one plug wire at a time and see if there is any worsening of symptoms? There is probably a way to do it with an ohm meter (or so I have been told), but I am not sure of the particulars.
