Battery or Starter?

Hello to all,

I am a recently new Rockster owner, so my experience is limited. I have recently had a new battery installed by the dealer (Motorcycle of Miami), oh maybe 3-4 months old. Went on quick run to visit a friend and check out the Beach, turned of the bike, maybe fifteen minutes later and had nothing. A real slow turn, then it started. I dismissed it and rode home, maybe 25 miles. Parked the bike, 10 minutes later went to put it away for the night and the same thing happened again. This probably is not that serious, but I am 2 months out of warranty. So where should I start looking, or maybe sounds from the starter I should be paying attention for. Thanks in advance for the wealth of knowledge on the board.

Try fully charging the battery. A fifteen-minute run isn't enough to replace the electricity used in starting the bike once.

Hey there...

I expericed something similar with mine actually, not long after I'd bought it. As it was sat in a showroom for sometime the battery would have been quick charged occasionally and was in need of some tender loving care...

I use an Optimate charger which does all manner of good things to your battery besides charging it. You basically connect it up everytime you've used your bike and let it do it's thing. I've had no problems since.

One other point... When you switch the ignition on, before you thumb the starter, you have to let the bike do all it's 'tests' before starting. Otherwise it get's itself into a mess. Might be teaching granny to suck eggs, but it caught me out!
