Slipping on the seat !

Post by John I. Stephen »

Is it just me or do you sometimes find yourself sliding up and down the standard seat on the R1150R? It gets a bit annoying and means that I am constantly re-adjusting my bum!

Whilst on the subject of sitting on the bike. Do any of you suffer from what appears to be cramp around the hip (in my case the right hip)? Often soon after I start a ride, or even during a ride, I get a definite pain in the upper leg (hip) and the only solution is to either stand up (not a good idea) or stretch out my right leg for a second or so and then tuck it back into the normal riding position.

Some of you 'older' bikers may well have found a solution to this :?: :!:

Thanks

John

You may want to try the footpeg lowering kit and/or a higher seat. I had cramps in my upper inner thighs when I had a cruiser from my feet being out in front of me. Now I have the R with standard seating...no more cramping.
I also have a Seargent seat which is wider and more "level" than stock which seems to slope slightly forward.

I have had the stiff hip for a number of years. It only occurs when first mounting, I just stand until I'm out of the driveway and it's gone for the rest of the day. The sargent reduced the sliding, except during hard braking. I'll try a corbin next, on thr LM it totally got rid of the problem.

Maybe something like the Triboseat might help your traction problem?

I get the same sometimes on the left hip ... shortly after starting to ride - less than 5, 10 minutes into it ... such a pain (literally)!

No clue why it happens - and always early in the morning. And never after or during long-ish ride.

I had the same problem on my old bike - not a BMW. I reckon WE need to get repaired, not the bikes. :( :? :(

I had the sliding problem when I first got mine. I kept sliding forward, which being a man, can get pretty damn uncomfortable if you catch my drift
I also found the seat really uncomfortable after any more than an hour or 2 though, so I swapped it for a Sargent seat. Cost me about £200, but I've never looked back, it's superb. I also wear Rukka shorts on long rides which makes a big difference as well.

As for the cramps, I used to get the same thing riding my old CBR600 two up, every now and then I had to pull over and explain to my pillion what I was doing! I don't get it any more now though, which is probably to do with the pegs being much lower on the roadster.

I'm not old, just prematurely gray, wrinkled, saggy.....

Where were we? I tend to forget so many... Oh yeah, hip pain. I get it too - try mounting from the other side - I found that a small help. And it's a self diagnosis act. If the OTHER hip hurts when you do that, you are straining the hip area when you mount.

You might even get the old body warmed up a bit. Full bike-gear jumping jacks in the driveway at 6 am is a sure fire way to make the paperboy do a double take.

My theory is the leg swing up and over - I have duck-leg DNA - and my superior <cough> fat <cough> physical conditioning may lead to a strain on the hip area as this is often first major motion of the day.

Of course the Roadster is a good bike if you have the problem. It is easy to stand up on - yeah, JIS, it's not the best idea. You can extend a leg over a cylinder - on the OPEN road I trust. Or, lean forward and place your feet on the rear pegs for a real change of pace - also not recommended for city driving.

If nothing else I serve as a source of amusement as cagers wonder why the ol' fat guy is doing an Olga Korbet act on that red bike.

Thanks guys, I have ordered and fitted the Triboseat; I'll try it out tomorrow! This solution is under £10 !!

Now the pain I have in my hip is another issue. Yes as some of you have said, perhaps a little work-out is required !!

Thanks

You'll post a review, I hope? WebBikeWorld has a review of the pillion seat. I'd be very interested to see if the rider's version is any good either.

The hip pain is a by-product of experience and wisdom.

I had the same pain and I too found a bit of stretching before the ride really did the trick. I still have to be cautious not to make a certain move with it but, the warm ups have really helped.

I thought about rigging an electric heating pad or maybe a hose which administers Ben Gay as I ride or maybe apply for a motorcycle handicap sticker....

The stock saddle takes about 15k miles to conform to your very own derriere. Once it breaks in, it's actually pretty comfortable. Until then, it's pretty darn uncomfortable!

Try the high saddle. I bought one and use it periodically - especially when I want my legs to be less bent.

I just got a high saddle which eliminated the cramp I used to get in my left knee :) , but it sometimes gives me a cramp in the left hip after mounting up. At first, the cramp lasted for ~1 hr, but now it only happens once in a while, and doesn't last a long when it does, so either the seat or me is breaking in! Think I'll try some warm-ups -- great weather for it!

Hello Spookymonster; Well the Triboseat works a treat! I was quite simply amazed at how it simply prevents you from moving forwards or backwards, not an inch. A great buy and one that I would recommend !

And my hip didn't even play up today either !

John - I'm referring to the BMW's tall saddle for the R1150R. You can get one at your dealer.

Sometimes I would get the hip pain so bad that I would have to pull over and walk it out. I've found that by doing some streching before a ride it has almost eliminated getting the pain. Hope this helps.
