Can you guys appraise my bike?

Post by Rick Lee »

I am getting ready to list her for sale because I want to get a 1200GS. I have seen crazy high prices and dirt cheap ones on these bikes. So I don't know where to start. I posted here recently asking about how much a replaced speedo would affect value if I have all records. Previous owner dropped the bike but replaced everything that got touched, including the gas tank (new one has no decals, which I like) and speedometer. Actual mileage is 17k (changes every few days). All records and my own detailed maint. log book (I DIY everything).

Farkles include:

Hepco-Becker crash bars
Tall seat
Higher wattage bulbs all around and relays
Signal minder kit
GS hand guards
K-bike mirrors
New Metzler front tire
Givi windscreen
Supertrapp muffler (I removed the baffles)

What say you?

Bike is non-ABS, comes with heated grips, system cases, not a scratch on her. Super clean condition.

She's beautiful. And black! Just like my Dominatrix. And mine would love to have a little sister, but alas I can not afford multiple bikes.

I would think the best you will be able to get for her is around the $7,000 mark. But that's just loosely based on what I've seen in ads at other places.

The non-ABS (even though I prefer it) will be a factor but the fairly low mileage might offset it. Good luck. I'm thinking the same thing about getting a GS in the next year or so.

Does it need to be in running condition...

Seriously, nice bike... Take a look at Cycletrader.com. Looks like $7000 would be low.

DC Market is soft - buyers choice.

Add-ons seldom draw their value - used is used for bikes.

Phil is close at 7K maybe 7.5 to 8K for someone who appreciates a naked, black bike and just really wants a Beemer. 17K miles is high for all but other BMW owners.

Across other markets, 2004's, non-ABS Roadsters are going as low as 5.5 to 6K.

Sorry, but that's the economy.

Good luck.
I don't mind paying for mistakes. Can I get a discount?

Kelly's Blue book lists the retail sales price for a 2004 R at 7995.

I think with the bags (a $800 option from the dealer for a new buyer) you could ask above 8.

The new R1200R is over $14k now, so the prices on used 1150's may hold longer.

I think I would take all extras off, return to a stripped naked bike. Ask $7500, what I paid last year for a 2002. Then sell the goodies on the BMW sites. Those extras could get you $800+.

I like this idea. I had really wanted to get her cleaned up this week and properly photographed. But my 911 threw me a check engine light and my best friend called to ask me to play with his band next weekend (lot of stuff to learn). So hopefully next Sunday I get her ready for sale and listed. I am dying for a black 1200GS. I hope I can find one soon after the roadster is gone.

Another vote for this idea; that is exactly what I would do, and considered, after seeing the R1200R. But, wait a few years for the R1XXXR to come out and you'll feel like dumping that 1200.

Only Harley farkles return dollar for dollar at retail time. (And only Harley sells used for more than the new MSRP).

Ok, just listed it. BTW, would a dealer totally kill me on a trade-in?

Retail value, and trade in value are different, and it's possible you could get killed. Most times a retail resell is the best bet.

But, trade-in sometimes works in a buyer's favor when buying a new bike because the trade in price is not subject to sales tax.
If you were buying a new 14k bike, and they gave you 7k in trade, only 7k would be subject to sales tax.

Comes down to the math of the transaction.
7% sales tax on 7k is $490, on 14k it's $980. So if you sell your bike for $500 more than the trade in offered and buy a new bike at 14k you are actually are breaking even with the old bike.

Alright, my beater Porsche is a '96 993 C2 and very heavily farkled. I have held just about every piece of this car in my hands at one time or another. It too has not a scratch on it, though I ran it into a wall at the track a week after I bought track insurance a few yrs. ago. So it's been resprayed and is back to showroom condition. Here's another angle when it was kind of dirty.

Just sold my 2004 non-abs, system cases, givi windscreen, 15,300 miles, excellent condition, for $7000. Was asking 7500, didn't get a whole lot of action on it...
