I need to replace my heated grips. My local dealer tells me that the grip and the heating eliment needs to be replaced together as they are once piece which is very expensive. The friendly folks at Chicago BMW told me that I am able to just replace the grips alone ($20.00). I have received the replacement grips, but hesitent to make the replacement until I hear how others have replaced their grips before I attempt to cut mine off.

I had to replace both my grips last year after they mysteriously split lengthwise, within a month or so of each other.
First, remove the bar end weights. Using a utility knife, or better still, an X-acto knife with the sharp edge pointed AWAY from the handlebar, slowly push the knife from the handlebar end to the switch cluster. The only place where there is much adhesive is at the inner end of the grip, so carefull pull the grip away from the heating element.
To slip the new grips on, really soak the inside of the grips with hair spray. It will act as a lubricant as you slip the grip on, but will dry sticky and keep the grip from slipping.
