MPG

Post by tourer »

What kind of gas mileage are you getting with your Rocksters.
I have an Edition 80 and get around 45mpg.
I've only had it for a month so I was wondering if this is what to expect for MPG.

Be happy with 45. I calculated my Ed. 80's city mpg today and it was about 24 miles per gallon!

Not unheard of. I get about 45 (US) mpg too. My fuel light usually pops on around 170-180 miles and i usually ride to about 200 miles before filling up and it will take 4-4.5 gallons to top it off. This is very consistent. I do a mix of riding on a regular basis. Commuting, canyon carving, some highway and just cruising on secondary roads.

It's strange how there is such a difference in mileage on the Rocksters and Beaksters. Some of it is riding style and some of it is the state of tune of the bike, but there must be something else going on. A variance of 20 mpg is huge. I consider myself the pretty average rider. Sometimes I spend many miles in lower gears hitting the twisties pretty hard. Full throttle some of the time. Then will cruise back home on the highway. Still get 45 mpg.
No matter where you go, there you are.

Can a proper TB sync affect MPG?

I average around 44mpg or so. Had a drop while I had on GS handguards (to 42mpg).

I've been commuting 70 miles round trip since the beginning of May. Funny that the motorcycle gets almost as many miles per tankful as my Saturn.

I see about 38 mpg, but that's riding pretty hard in the twisties with speeds consistently 75-80 mph.

last tank was 42 MPG, I have gotten as low as 32. I always run Premium and I always hit the rev limiter

Low to mid 30s :(

Don't the USA bikes have a higher top gear than us ? Lower revs at speed would certainly help.

Riding city and hard in the twisties I average around mid- to upper-30s. On those longer, flatter rides with very little stop-and-go traffic I am doing better than 40, but rarely more than 45.
Traffic signals timed for 35mph, are also timed for 70mph.

MPG

Post by zax1150 »

 .......Best so far on the motorway @ 75mph is 48Mpg (UK)
& around 37 in town

seems to be getting better as I slowly approach 20,000miles on the clock

mind you that's with a fair handful of throttle 8)

I have found the bike's waaaay smoother tuning it with the BMW GT1
lot less vibes from idle to redline

I have ranged from 40 mpg to 50 mpg for a tank. I was in the 40-42 range for a while, and then I replaced my spark plugs and air filter. Now I am in the 45-48 range doing a mixture of all riding except sitting in traffic.

Most of my mileage is from 45 - 55mph, back roads and some highways, very little stopping at lights or stop signs

I am surprised to see that even with my own bike (Rockster 80 Edition) the fuel consumption range is so wide. I suspect that a cold winter versus a warm summer have a huge effect. Colder temperatures mean higher air density thus more air resistance. Apparantly, the effect of higher fuel combustion efficiency at lower ambient temperatures (basic thermodynamics) have less an effect and do not counterbalance the increased air resistance at all.

For example, during the last winter, I could barely reach 31MPG (US). Last weekend, during a trip in Eifel, Germany, I reached 44MPG (US). A record high. And I wouldn't describe my driving style as particularly fuel economic... I also think that my bike uses a lot more gas on the highway than on country roads. It appears that it is equally thirsty for either cruising at 75MPH (120km/hr) or beating the sh*t out of it driving up hairpins on mountain roads. Anyways, the average of this 640-mile, 3-day trip was almost 39MPG. I wish I would always get this milage. I am usually happy with anything better than 36MPG...

Note - 1 US Gallon = 0.833 Imperial Gallon (UK) = 3.785 liter
1 Imperial Gallon (UK) = 1.2 US Gallon = 4.546 liter
So add 20% to Imperial MPG to compare with US MPG
