Transmission & Rear Drive Oil Change

Post by yellowfinch11 »

I just got back from the stores and purchased the Mobil 1 Synthetics for the transmission and the rear end. It looks like a pretty straight job.

Now I notice the instructions say to replace the crush washer and that I don't have!

How important is the crush washer to replace with new? Can I use the old ones? Sure would like to wrap this project up this weekend, but now am wondering if I have to drive back to the dealership or order online and wait a few days....again!?!

Thanks for your thoughts!

If the old washer is not badly deformed it is safe to use it again. But watch the plug for several days afterward to detect seepage.

The old washer should be OK. I recently did the same fluid change. Be sure you can get the FILLER caps loose before the drain caps come out. (I've heard of guys draining their fluids and then having trouble removing the filler caps.) Also I notice, with the Mobil 1, a little more tranny rattle at idle than before. Someone said that the synthetics don't have the "cushioning" action that dino oils do. The tranny seems to shift slightly better though. Another gripe is that you need just slightly more than one quart to do both the tranny and rear drive, so you have to buy two.

As long as the crush washer isn't too deformed you'll be fine.

I've used one (on the engine of my ZXR400) about 8 times or so.

(what I used to do was put a ring of silicone sealant around the very bottom end of the drain bolt - just to help the seal.

Thanks for your input. I actually bought the Mobil 1 75-140w Full Synthetic for the tranny and Mobil 1 75-90w Full Synthetic for the rear end. Are you saying you need more than 1 quart for each???

No, one quart won't quite do both. You'll be fine. Keep an eye for slight seepage around the rear drive boot/seal for a while. Sometimes a seal will start leaking with synthetic where it wasn't leaking with dino. Sounds strange, but I've heard it happening in more than one case. Mine seems fine with syn.
